I just upgraded my system from 10.04 to 10.10 using the built-in
upgrade mechanism. Upon connecting to the machine remotely via neatx
(which was installed and working before the upgrade), I find that the
bar at the top of each window is scrambled. See here:

I haven't done extensive testing, but I see the problem on all windows
except for the Chrome browser. It seems to only look like this
through neatx, and not when using the machine locally.

Any ideas?

Are you using compositing?  Translucent window bars?  Compiz?  Beryl?
Try changing themes, switching window managers.

More details of your environment would help.

It is whatever is default in an Ubuntu desktop install. I believe
that it uses Compiz, but not translucent window bars. I have tried
changing themes and the problem was present before, during, and after
the change. I'd have to install another window manager to test if
that changes anything, and it will be at least a few hours before I
can try that.

Is there any other info that would be helpful?

Apparently this is an issue that occurs with Ubuntu 10.10, and only
happens using the Windows NX client:
http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=1590440
That thread suggests disabling render extensions on the client. This
does fix the display issue, but causes consistent instability. That's
the best option at this point and, despite the thread being marked as
"solved", it is an ongoing issue.

To others that may run into this issue, NoMachine has released an update for the windows client that fixes this.

Thanks Shaun, this problem had been bugging me for a while. Glad I
didn't have to go back to VNC!
