Don’t know if you guys in the northeast have seen this, but there’s a new threat to ham use of the 900 band. Comments to this petition are due by
5 September 2024. Anyone know a ham attorney who might be helpful in forming the most effective comments?

Once again another UPS-esque flim flam scam on Ham Radio aka the 220 mhz band. My input is simple. Who is paying for the X axis scheme?  And why is it justified anyway.

And the promised relocation assistance to lawful ham users of the 900 spectrum should be the immediate return of the entire 220 mhz band to  Amateur Radio as the First Priority licensee. Let’s see how important this LMS scheme is to them. Since the last 220 scheme blew up in their face it would be easy to do.

If this was to happen, it would wipe all repeaters off the band. The vast majority of our radios and repeaters are only capable of operating at the edges of the band as we’re currently doing with repeater inputs at 902 and outputs on 927. Let’s hope that the huge amount of Part 15 devices that we’re mostly living with, will prevent this from happening…

I like their goal, but can it be accomplished with minimal impact to our 900mhz spectrum?

Please don't lynch me for saying that... :X

While I am not going to suggest that I write better than someone who deals with legal proceedings on a regular basis, I would recommend that everyone still file a comment. I am going to try to bang out a few paragraphs on it this weekend. NEAR-900 has a great story to tell. Here is some of the bullet points I wrote down on my cocktail napkin:

  • NEAR-900 made a multi-state linked repeater system, with participants spending their own money.
  • NEAR-900 is actively experimenting with digital modes
  • NEAR-900 participants saved countless used Part 47 LMR radios, repeaters, and accoutrements from being trashed and repurposed them to Part 97, preventing tons of e-Waste.

I'm sure I can find a few other talking points as I put pen to paper. Anyone can submit an FCC comment, just be polite and professional.

I composed some comments that I will be submitting this week, I put them
up on my website in case anyone wants to piggy back on my research.

Hi Ben, it looks really good, only thing is in the last paragraph instead og saying FCC grant the proposal, use FCC yo drny the proposal as it would be detrimental to the users on the band already. Make it look like a bad thing if the FCC makes a decision to move it along. Also make sure the ARRL comment was from 2010, back when the band usage was in it's infancy and not the leagues view as of today. I am writing the league also to cone up with a new view point on the 900 Mhz band, hopefully someone there will actually do something, but then again the league is a mess after their cyber incident and hostile working enviroment from folks I have talked to. I'm going to be writing mine later this week, and will definitely be utilizing parts of your comment in mine. Biggest thing everyone has to do is get the word to the clubs fellow amateurs and get them to respond. Only by flooding the FCC with comments will be our only chance at trying to save the band.
