For those of you who are members of Washington Education Association and NEA, here is a group to know about and consider joining.  They are the caucus for the NEA-Representative Assembly.  If you have an interest to further our standing in the National Education Association and help pass resolutions that enhance our profession in the teacher’s union, I urge you to join this group.

I attended NEA-RA twice by being elected by my local association--once in Washington, D.C. and once in L.A.  Our connection within the structure of the teacher’s association is NEA-LIT.  This winter be on the watch for NEA-RA nominations in your local association, and consider submitting your name.  Next summer—Denver.

For more information about the group and how to join, contact Linda Lucke, Chair of NEA-LIT (llu...@d70schools.org).

§  NEA RA 2013...We're Back! [1 Update]

Erin Carr <ecubb...@gmail.com> Jul 05 05:05PM -0700

Hi Everyone!

It was great meeting you all at our reorganizational meeting at the RA in Atlanta.  We are a small but mighty group dedicated to furthering appreciation and understanding about our profession as school librarians, media specialists and technology specialists.

It turns out the previous NEA LIT caucus Google group still exists, so we will use that for our discussions.  You can view it at groups.google.com/groups/nealit.  I will repost this email there so you will know if you found the right place!

Here are the minutes of our meeting, held July 5, 2013 from 12:30-1:30 pm at the Georgia World Convention Center in Atlanta, Georgia.  They are probably out of order, my apologies.

Our chair, Linda Lucke (IL) explained we will have a booth next year, and those who officially join our caucus by paying nominal dues will get a ribbon and a gift to be determined.  Look for us in Denver!

Some of the items we would like to discuss through our Google group are:

Implications of Common Core standards

Certified librarians being replaced by job titles that reduce their status, or replaced by untrained ESPs, or libraries with no staff.

Affecting change through NEA - look at resolutions related to libraries (B72 and B74)

Sharing of standards already in place:  AASL:  http://www.ala.org/aasl/standards-guidelines/learning-standards
Pennsylvania's Curriculum Model for school libraries:  http://www.pdesas.org/module/sas/curriculumframework/librarymodelcurriculum.aspx
Illinois Standards-Aligned Instruction for School Libraries:  http://www.islma.org/ISAIL.htm

NBI 54 is on the agenda for this RA, supporting school libraries.  The motion was made by Stephen Williams (GA) and seconded by Molly Bates (NJ) to support this NBI.  The caucus unanimously voted to support.

In the upcoming weeks, the full capability of Google Groups will be explored.  In the meantime, please plan to join our group and stay tuned for updates!

Please email questions to our chair, Linda Lucke (llu...@d70schools.org).

Respectfully,
Erin Carr (IL)
