Subsidiary Goals

"The network has the subsidiary goals of:

Facilitating biodiversity and conservation research.

Assisting member herbaria with infrastructural assistance insofar as
it serves the primary goal.

Providing a collaborative platform for obtaining funding to support
goals.

Serving as a conduit for sharing and communicating latest databasing
and bioinformatics technologies to member institutions."

Please provide suggestions and comments as posts to this thread. If
you want to actually edit a draft version of the subsidiary goals you
can do
so via a Google Doc accessible through the Subsidiary Goals page.

I think the goals work well.

Patrick,

I like the mission statement and most of the subsidiary goals. I
still have some concerns about the second one though. It's ambiguous,
and as was mentioned, we might want to stay away from "best practice"
and other types of assistance being covered under other efforts. Data
basing other herbarias' collection would serve our primary goal, but
are we as a group going to offer to do that, say for small herbaria or
collections? I'm not sure how to refine it, but I think it needs more
work.

Thanks!

Julie

Hi Julie,

I agree with you on this. I am inclined to delete this goal
entirely. Goals three and four overlap with this goal and could be
viewed as providing a kind of assistance to members of the node. What
about deleting it?

Hi all,

I went ahead and made some changs in the subsidiary goals and posted
these in the google doc. Here's what I"m suggesting:

"The consortium has the subsidiary goals of:
Facilitating herbarium-based biodiversity and conservation research
and management.
Sharing knowledge on digitization and other museum informatics
technologies.
Coordinating with other relevant regional, national, and international
networks and organizations.
Obtaining funding to support the goals of the network."

Of course, these are only suggestions meant to provoke further
editing, etc. Thanks, and best,

Michael

Minor tweaking ...

The consortium has the subsidiary goals of:
> Facilitating herbarium-based biodiversity and conservation research ["and management" -- Delete here, reword and/or make it another bullet ... I can't figure out what it means ... "herbarium-based conservation research management"?]
> Sharing knowledge on digitization and other museum informatics technologies.
> Coordinating with other relevant regional, national, and international networks and organizations.
> Obtaining funding to support the goals of the ["network." -- meaning our consortium, right? Change to "consortium" otherwise there is confusion because of the use of "network" in the previous bullet.] Actually though, I think this last bullet should be deleted, partly because it is implicit and partly because one of the goals is to "facilitate ... research" and we're not going to be soliciting funding for research per se.

I just looked back at this
and realized you have to click on "show quoted text" to see my edits

Thanks Janet,

About the first subsidiary goal, "and management" refers to management
(the line between management and research can be fuzzy I suppose)
activities that a conservation biologist or land managers conduct, for
example. I think having biodiversity coupled with this makes the
wording a bit awkward. How about:

"Facilitating herbarium-based biodiversity research and conservation
activities."

I'm not sure how I feel about the last goal, it is implicit in the
mission. I do not agree that the funding we obtain will not be
"facilitating...research". Obtaining funding to provide end users
(e.g., conservationists & managers) access to the data housed in
member institutions, can be viewed as facilitating research.
