It looks as if we have settled on the Mission, Subsidiary Goals and
Name. I've posted these as the welcome message on the google group
page.
The next things to focus on are the membership list, web site, and
invitation to join the group.
Membership List:
About the membership list, the membership working group is making good
progress. James has passed on the updated Index Herbariorum list that
Pat Holmgren provided, and I think that the membership group is
working on bringing this even more up to date. Maybe someone from the
membership group can provide us with an update.
Website:
About the website, a few examples of possible banners are provided on
the google group site - see the "Web site banners" page (<http://groups.google.com/group/neahc/web/web-site-banners?hl=en
>). I encourage everyone to please take a look at these and provide
your thoughts; Karen started a discussion thread for this. The banner
will dictate how other parts of the site are constructed. As soon as
this is settled, Kathie and I will begin working on getting the site
put together. This is a priority, so get your comments in soon.
Invitation:
There has been some mention on the group site about the invitation,
and we should have some discussion about what this invitation will
include. So that we can begin working on this, could someone from the
membership working group draft something up and post it to a
discussion thread? Some obvious things to include: Mission,
Subsidiary goals, brief background about recent happenings (e.g., a
brief synopsis of the meeting), & brief announcement of 2009 meeting.
There are other things that could be added. One easy way to convey
all of this information would be to have our web site up and provide a
link to it. This brings up the issue of when the invitation will be
sent out, and some have suggested end of June as a deadline. While it
is laudable to send something out ASAP, we might wait until the web
site is up before sending anything out. It should be possible to have
the site up soon, but maybe not by the end of June. We can discuss
the merits of waiting or not on the "Memberships, invitations, draft"
discussion thread that Alina has started.
Concomitant with the above priorities, we can work on this:
Demonstration project (Celastrus and Epipactis data):
Karen sent an email to the group and started a new discussion thread
about getting this going again. Janet provided an example data file
from the original 2004 initiative, and modified version of this has
been posted to the files section of the google site. This modified
version includes the original example worksheet and a blank worksheet
with the desired fields, including two new ones: Decimal Latitude and
Longitude. It would be great if everyone could collect data for the
taxa originally proposed (i.e., Celastrus orbiculatus, C. scandens,
and Epipactis helleborine) and send these to me. I'll consult with
the bioinformatics working group (i.e., James) about how to proceed
with these files.
Anyway, I think this gives a decent idea of how things are
proceeding. If anyone has anything to add or if there are questions,
please reply!
