Dear all,

I was thinking that perhaps we should invite more people to the forum
so they could also participate in the discussions? (I could use the
emails from Karen and James).

Best,

Alina.

I think that's a great idea

It seems a bit premature for this. It was my impression that we were
attempting to establish some organization, set up the web site, and
then send out a broad invitation (putting everything we have done up
to this point in context) to join in the discussion. This google
group was intended to be a temporary tool to achieve this initial
effort. By no means is there any attempt underway to exclude anyone
from participating in the node. It seems that by inviting the list of
potential members to the google group we are inviting a bit of chaos,
as many will have no context within which to view much of what we have
been discussing.

Can we let this simmer for a couple of days to let the rest of group
reply to this?

If everyone does agree to go this route, then we will need to send
along with the google group invite some sort of text that puts
everything up to this point into context.

I agree about leaving this to a smaller group to keep things manageable.
Amendments and changes can always be made later in organizational
discussions. Otherwise you risk a great deal of confusion.
Cheers!

Maybe we should have sent an invitation to become part of this temporary google list to the list that Kate/James had very very early (so everyone interested could have been aware and participate of the discussions?). And later on, we could have sent a Formal invitation to the Node to everyone?.

Hi all,

I haven't followed all the discussion about this issue, but my sense
is that it might be good to go just a little further with the
organizing before inviting everyone to join in. It seems like it
would be a good idea to firm up the web site, make sure we have a
really solid statement of goals, and a nice, compelling statement
about the motivation, etc., and then broaden the discussion. This is
not in any way meant to be exclusionary, and absolutely everything
would be subject to change as the broader coalition takes shape, but
the transition to the broader discussion could probably benefit from a
little more time developing the basics. It probably won't take long
at all to get to this point. All the best,

Michael

My feeling is that it would be healthy to open up discussion to folks
at other herbaria. I think everyone's ideas should be welcome, not
just our own. Besides it would be easier to change something we're
doing -- or the way we're doing it -- now than it would be later. As
we get more and more established, it will just become more and more
difficult to change.

It is probably time to do this. When the invites to join the
consortium are sent, we could add representatives of institutions to
the google group as they join. Regardless, so that everyone can
follow our discussions, we should include a link to the group in the
invite email.

Does anyone have any objections to this?
