Kelp Forest Biological Monitoring Technician in the Byrnes Lab

The Byrnes lab at UMass Boston seeks two summer technicians for work on field sampling as part of a NASA MUREP grant (https://bit.ly/murep_byrnes_2022) involving calibration and groundtruthing of remote sensing products in the nearshore Gulf of Maine. This work involves subtidal sampling of kelp beds, assisting in deployment of calibration instruments, aiding a side scan sonar campaign, manual classifications of remote sensing products as needed, and data entry. Technicians will work closely with the project lead Dr. Meredith McPherson as well as Drs. Mark Borrelli, Jarrett Byrnes, and project graduate students. Technicians must possess AAUS or equivalent scientific diver certifications.
Qualifications: The ideal candidate will need to be able to work as part of a field research team, with solid communication skills. Candidates should have familiarity with marine environments - either a degree or working towards a degree with a marine science focus - have a strong attention to detail, and confidence to handle difficult ocean conditions in collaboration with a supervisor. The seasonal technician should be able to spend long periods of time outdoors, be able to lift 50 lbs., and is expected to work 40 hrs a week, Monday to Friday, with the exception of holidays. Some early morning hours or working through weekends will be required due to tidal schedules, with concomitant time off. Scientific diving (AAUS or equivalent) certification is required.
Salary: The salary for this position is $8,000 for the summer. The position is non-benefitted.
