Marine Resource Specialist I
BRIEF JOB DESCRIPTION: This is a technical services and scientific job that requires field and office skills relevant to public health and the environment in support of the Maine Shellfish Sanitation Program.
Field work involves collecting seawater, stream, and shellfish samples and environmental data from the NH Border to western Penobscot Bay by boat or truck. This position also provides field and lab support in a back-up capacity to DMR’s Marine Biotoxin Monitoring Program. Additionally, this job involves working in a team to complete shoreline surveys of homes and businesses to identify sources of coastal pollution. Qualified applicants who meet DMR requirements will serve as crew or operator aboard the Water Quality Program’s fleet of small boats. Field work is conducted year-round in variable weather and can involve walking over steep or uneven terrain. Program needs will dictate the actual amount of time spent in the field.
Office work includes database entry, basic statistical data analysis, and technical report writing in compliance with National Shellfish Sanitation Program standards. This position will work with the Shellfish Growing Area Program Supervisor to promulgate shellfish harvest closures in waters where poor water quality and/or pollution sources are found to exist.
Flexibility in scheduling is mandatory as weekend, holiday and after-hours work will be necessary depending on the season and activity. Work is performed under general supervision.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS: Four (4) years experience and/or education in the compilation and summarization of scientific field and laboratory data.
