We are losing valuable data, like cloud structure, confirmed
restrictions to visibility, and many pieces of information that went
into amendments to the forecast during the last generation. We are
suffering from lines going down during tropical cyclones creating
blackouts during weather emergencies. A good example is Charley. In
2004, one lone ASOS site stayed on line, alerting SW Florida authorities
to 145 mph winds approaching as they evacuated the highway saving
hundreds of lives. We may not be so lucky next time. 25 years ago if you
so much as laid white-out on your LCD you were reprimanded by your
superior. Today you could be flying your aircraft on approach reading
10SM CLR with 00SM FG waiting for you on the runway with a death
sentence. Back in the early 90s, this program went before the Feds as
the best thing since sliced bread. They bought it. Today we suffer. They
wanted to take the on-site observers out of the major airports, in
addition to the small fields. The contractors protested, saving hundreds
of lives from crashes in and around the airports. Foreign countries have
on-site observers. Deficit or no deficit, we deserve better. Take care,
Louie
