Last night I put two dollar bills into the farebox
on a bus, and it started to dispense me a fifty-cent
Charle Ticket as change like normal.

But the ticket only came out about a 1/4 inch,
then got sucked back in, then shoved out again,
then back in, then back out, ... I didn't quite
know what to do, but while I was gaping at this,
he driver saw the machine literally f*ing up,
cursed, and grabbed the ticket and violently
pulled it out of the machine for me.
She said that the machine would have "voided the ticket".

As a result, I am not confident that my fifty cents is
actually on this ticket. Is this failure mode is common?
How can I tell if my ticket is good?
What do I do if it's not?

Go to a station and pass it through a Charlie machine.

They can read the value remaining on cards and tickets.

You should really try to go to a station and use a machine there
rather than at the fare box if that is possible.
