What about car registrations?
What state are you in? The policy likely varies from state to state.
If it is possible to do, you might try to renew your license online and
see if it goes through. At first, I wondered why you would want to give
your money to a state agency half a year ahead of time. Then I realized
that you may be in Massachusetts and the prodigious Guvn'r might raise
the license fees again 2-3 times before June, making it very worthwhile
to lock in your rate as soon as possible.
If you are a member, there are also two AAA offices to renew your
license in Massachusetts, one is in Newton, the other is in or near
Worcester. Very little lines, excellent service. It turned out that
the state unions did not appreciate that one bit. So go right away, the
Mass DMV/RMV unions just successfully lobbied to halt AAA from providing
good customer service there, if it hasn't happened already. This as
Massachusetts just shuttered its own state offices across the
Commonwealth. The proper thing would have been to expand this service
to more locations and more auto clubs. It has been very successful
elsewhere, including Rhode Island.
In MA, you can renew it quite early. I *think* up to a year in
advance. I discovered this about a year ago when I was at the
Cambridgeside Galleria and walked into the registry office, since mine
was up for renewal in another 3 or 4 months. I was told I could do it
right then, so I did.
Massachusetts. Yes, I shoulda mentioned that.

I heard that the state was going to stop sending reminders for
licenses and registrations. Seems like a nice way to pick up a few
bucks in penalties. I'm worried that it will just slip my mind next
spring.

Some of these smaller and non-state offices have closed.
I'd check the RMV web site to be sure of what is there and what is
open.
I live near the office in Roslindale and although it is a new office
(rebuit and relocated in the same building) it is not unusual to see a
line out the darn door onto the street.
That part didn't change.
