Maine Says NO to Same-Sex "marriage"

This has come a a surprise to me. Explanation for defeat of same-
sex "marriage" in other states have boiled down to states being
socially conservative (Arkansas) or having huge Roman Catholic anchor
baby populations (California). Maine is a liberal, lily-white state.
Could there be something about defining marriage as between one man
and one woman that appeals to those not conservative nor religious?
