FLEETBOSTON CELEBRITY SERIES TO OPEN 2000-2001 SEASON
WITH CLEVELAND ORCHESTRA
IN SYMPHONY HALL ON OCTOBER 6 AT 8 PM
Maestro Christoph von Dohnányi to conduct
program of Beethoven, Berio and Tchaikovsky
(Boston) FleetBoston Celebrity Series, Martha H. Jones, President and
Executive Director, will present THE CLEVELAND ORCHESTRA conducted by
Christoph von Dohnanyi on Friday, October 6 at 8 p.m. in Symphony Hall.
The orchestra’s guest soloist will be mezzo-soprano Dagmar Peckova.
Cleveland Orchestra Executive Director, Thomas W. Morris, will give a
pre-concert talk in Symphony Hall’s Higginson Room one hour before the
performance at 7 p.m. This concert is sponsored by Alden Merrell Fine
Desserts.
In celebration of the 100TH ANNIVERSARY OF SYMPHONY HALL the FleetBoston
Celebrity Series is opening its 2000-2001 season with this Cleveland
Orchestra performance. The Cleveland Orchestra first performed in
Symphony Hall in 1921. Over the course of the 20th century, the Celebrity
Series has presented the Orchestra 32 times, making them the most
frequently performing visiting ensemble in Symphony Hall history.
THE CLEVELAND ORCHESTRA was founded in 1918 under the direction of
Russian-American conductor Nikolai Sokoloff, who initiated an extensive
domestic touring schedule, educational concerts, commercial recordings
and radio broadcasts. George Szell was named music director in 1946, and
served until his death in 1970. Following a brief period of advisory
leadership from 1970-72 by French composer and conductor Pierre Boulez,
the orchestra named Lorin Maazel its fifth music director. In 1982,
Christoph von Dohnányi was appointed music director of the Cleveland
Orchestra, and began his tenure two years later. In preparation for Mr.
Dohnányi’s retirement in 2002, Austrian conductor Franz Welser-Möst was
appointed as the seventh music director of The Cleveland Orchestra.
Born in Berlin, CHRISTOPH VON DOHNANYI was a law student at the
University of Munich after World War II, but soon chose to pursue his
music studies full time. He spent a period of time studying with his
grandfather, Ernö (Ernst von) Dohnanyi, at Florida State University, and
studied conducting at Tanglewood. Dohnányi accepted a coaching and
conducting position at the Frankfurt Opera in 1952, eventually becoming
artistic and music director. Mr. Dohnányi has also served as director of
the West German Radio Symphony Orchestra in Cologne and, from 1978 to
1984, as director and principal conductor of the Hamburg State Opera.
During the 1992-93 season, he conducted a new production of Wagner’s
four-opera Ring of the Nibelung cycle at the Vienna State Opera.
In 1992, Mr. Dohnanyi was awarded the Union Medal from New York’s Union
Theological Seminary for his ongoing work to honor leaders of the German
Resistance during World War II. In 1995, Mr. Dohnányi was given a special
Scroll of Remembrance from the United States Holocaust Museum to honor
“The von Dohnanyi and Bonhoeffer families” involved in the German
Resistance. Mr. Dohnanyi is a Commandeur de l’Ordre des Arts et des
Lettres of the Republic of France and holder of Germany’s Commander’s
Cross of the Order of Merit and of Austria’s Commander’s Cross.
Mezzo-soprano DAGMAR PECKOVA was born in Chrudim near Prague and is a
graduate of the Prague Conservatory. Ms. Peckóvá has appeared in numerous
roles with the Berlin State Opera and other major opera houses and
concert halls throughout Europe. She made her United States debut with
the Cleveland Orchestra in 1999.

> FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
"ne.news" is a discontinued newsgroup with little readership and
spotty propagation. I suggest that you instead post your press
release to "ne.general" and "ne.arts".

Who discontinued it?
It's supposed to have little readership, ne.news is mainly for usenet
administrators or similarly interested parties.
ne.news is for the discussion of things like creating new groups under
ne.* or deleting or combining or moderating existing groups or similar
subjects. "news" in this case refers to "the usenet news system" which
all this is, often shortened to just "news" (hence, dejanews.com, a
service which will let you do searches on usenet news articles, or
did.)
Granted this group isn't used much in practice but if it were to be
discontinued that would have to be discussed here :-)

ne.config was created for the ne.* discussions, leaving ne.news to
attract the confused. Of course, I imagine that any real ne.* group
discussions would be posted to both groups now..

Good point, you've jogged my memory (all the exercise it gets lately.)

For that purpose, it was replaced by "ne.config".
