Back in the day, shore.net on Cape Ann provided excellent service. All I
want is email, preferably with a handful of addresses, and webmail access, a
personal web page with a modest disk requirement, and good newsgroup access.
All from dialup, at a decent rate. I know that many people have gone to the
various broad-band connection, and I also know that the major players are
doing all they can to avoid dealing with customers that may need some tech
support.
Are there any modern-day "shore.net"s with a good selection of dial-up
numbers in eastern Massachusetts and southern New Hampshire? (I expect the
need to dial up from a variety of locations, both in MA and NH, and
occasionally from other parts of the US and Canada).

After TIAC went the way (showing age here), I went with a reseller in
NH for like 30 days but had interface issues. I had a Mac that had to
connect and they were 100% Windows. They actually dumped me as a
customer rather than try to figure out what was wrong. I later
determined what was wrong myself.
I then went to Surfbest (www.surfbest.net) which is another network
reseller.
At the time they were based in Maine but are now based in Texas.
Since its a virtual operation the location of their physical office
doesn't really matter.
I kept them several years until DSL arrived.
They have access to something like 15 networks and have plenty of
dial-ups in New England. I was allowed 5 full pop boxes, unlimited
connection and 40K newsgroups. Their personal web space is vended out
and I never used it.
Flat $12.50/month hasn't changed in years.
Service is accessible during daytime hours by phone and 24/7 by e-mail.

They still work?
I use net1plus.com for my T1 service. It looks like they offer dialup, but use
the standard global modem pools most people use. I have no idea what the tech
support is like for the non-T1 customers, but it might be worth a shot.

Well, yeah, this happened back in 1998. Almost everyone is using one of
a handful or providers. Even more so than in '98.

Yep. I would imagine with DSL/cable vendors eating into the home market and
Wifi hot-spots being used by the laptop mobile warrior tribe, that the
traditional modem infrastructure has shrunk quite a bit since the 90's. I
think its been 4-5 years since I last used a modem, except when I was troubling
shooting some problem at my parents or sisters computers.
