Hi,

I am doing some research about installing a 56k frame relay connection
into my home in southern NH. Does anyone else have a setup like this
in NH? My town has a private telco, in case that matters. I have
received quotes from about 4 ISPs in the area. The prices range from
$200/mo to $500/mo. $200/mo might be doable, but $500/mo seems a bit
steep.

Also, will a 56k frame relay connection be much faster than a 56k
modem that connects at 48k consistently? I understand the frame relay
connection is full duplex (4-wire) as opposed to the 2-wire modem
connection. What does that buy me?

At the high end, I can do FTP downloads at ~5Kb/s (according to
WS_FTP). Will the FR connection buy me any more speed, in addition to
the full-time connection? What are the limits on number of
simultaneous accesses to my servers for HTTP, FTP, etc.? I also will
be using the connection to do work during the day, so I wonder if it
will be saturated too easily if folks are hitting servers on my small
network, too.

Thanks for any advice,
Greg

The short answer: it depends.

A 56K frame relay connection theoretically offers the full
56K bandwidth in either direction, i.e. your maximum upload
speed is also 56K instead of V.90's 33.6K maximum.

However, the actual throughput you get at any given time
on a frame relay connection is dependent on the aggregate
bandwidth currently being used on the network you are
connected to. Depending on your lines' CIR it is possible
during peak times to end up with 16K, or virtually no
throughput, for short intervals.

Often yes, but it would probably be an incremental increase.

You need to understand what specific services you will provide
and how actively will they be accessed.
