I was wondering if there are any ones out there who've had as
bad an experience as I've had with this landscaping contractor
(see Sunject line).
If you are, I would like to hear from you (dow...@acm.org).
I'm preparing to take them to court, since they refuse to do
the right thing.

I hired this contractor this summer to install a new lawn
in my backyard, after checking his references and the usual
places. The contract called for clearing of the existing weeds,
removing an existing crushed stone area, leveling/grading,
spreading two inches of loam, plus seeding. The contractor has
spread the crushed stones throughout the lawn, brought in poor
quality loam containing stones larger than the crushed stones,
pieces of broken glass, and pieces of fabric + other junks.
To make the story short, I have ended up with a backyard full
of stones and weeds instead of a healthy lawn.

I called the ALCM (Associated Landscape Contractors of MA), which
this contractor is a member of, and they recommended talking to
two other landscapers. So far, I have met with one of them and he
has told me that I have gotten an extremely poor product and no
matter how much repair is done, due to poor foundation, I will
never have a good lawn, unless is redone. I have also been
alerted to the liability factor of pieces of glass (I don't have
kids but my relatives and neighbors do).

I would be interested in your similar experiences.
Best Regards, sd.

If the contractor is unwilling or unable to immediately fix it or
refund your money, your next call should be to a lawyer.

To be honest with you, there's no such thing as good landscaping
contractor (or at least I haven't found
one yet).

The contractor my builder gave us in 1999 when we constructed our house
(A-1 Landscape in
Westford, beware of him!) gave us exactly what you've described below -
crappy sandy loam, tons
of broken china and glass, tons of rocks, and weeds. This year we
re-did the whole yard and I
personally took care of each of the items - bought good quality loam
from Guy Constantine in
Tyngsboro, had someone spread it using a Bobcat that I rented, and I did
the seeding and
fertilizer myself. The lawn came up within a week and I have the best
looking yard in my
neighborhood! And, best of all I spent less than half of what some of
the contractors had
quoted initially ($8000 +, I spent $3500).

I would consider calling the AG's office or may be small claims court
depending on the amount.

Good luck,
Arun
