Greetings from Bangor, ME.
Check out Lily Bay SP on the East side of Moosehead Lake.
And, of course, there's Baxter SP.
Also, look for a canoe maker whose place is on the main highway (?) toward
Rockwood from Greenville. His name is Rickards, (I think) and he builds
cedar strip canoes and tells tall tales. He might still be alive...
In Greenville there are numerous white water rafting outfits. If you have
time, a day trip on the Kennebec or Penobscot is great. Also, there are
two canoe makers in Dover-Foxcroft who use traditional methods (wood
canvas -- no plastic). Jerry Stelmok is one of them.
Dont know the Eagle Lake area, but if you are going that far Down east,
get over to the coast from Machias - Eastport. Helen's Restaurant in
Machias is (justly) famous for their blueberry pies, which ought to be
right about in season when you're there.
There is a SP and a national wildlife refuge, right along the coast.
There are some phenomenal tides in the Bay of Fundy and a couple of really
cool lighthouses. Also, consider Campobello for a rainy day. Just over
the bridge into New Brunswick, a marvellous day trip.
On the way through Bangor, check out the Bangor state fair, and the Maine
Shakespeare festival, which is on at the end of July - early August.
Three plays in repertory, performed outdoors on banks of the Penobscot
River, Thursday - Sunday nights.
Mosquitos? We got 'em real bad this year. This past weekend, with temps
over 90, they were not as bad. Where you're going, it won't be that warm,
so bring lots of Cutter.
