Here are some variations on a theme, all loops from Milford, NH to Hillsborough, NH and back, 60-70 miles, lots of dirt and climbing.
Caveat: If anyone wants to follow one of these routes, let me know. There are (small) parts I wouldn't recommend and some parts that I would recommend but are pretty rough. I was riding Panaracer Pasela 35s for most of it, with a low gear of 1:1 and rode almost all of each route. You could certainly get away with skinnier tires and bigger gears for most of it. For the most part, there's a wealth of great (and steep!) dirt roads in the general Lyndeborough/Francestown/New Boston/Henniker/Hillsborough area.

Hey Jon, new to this group. Thanks for the post. Been looking for Southern NH Gravel routes for a while. Actually spent Thursday ambling around Temple Mason area looking for new stuff, so this link is perfect

My ride from Sunday. About 50% dirt which was in excellent shape, by my favorite cat 3 climb (Mountain Road in Mount Vernon) was freshly paved!

Snowmobile trail, ripped up ATV tracks, single track and road.  I'd say 30% of this is paved.  The roughest parts would be like what was on the Rosey.

24 miles of trails, multi-use paths and decent roads in an effort to link up all the unpaved goodies in Wellesley.  mellow and flat with a few exceptions.

Does anyone know of a resource that generally shows unpaved roads in southern NH?  It might take me 100 years to find out the old fashioned way.

I was nosing around for routes in the Townsend, MA / Hollis,NH area, and I found these two...some of Lenny's roads I think and some other stuff:

http://ridewithgps.com/routes/2856407   Does anyone know if you can cut across the state border into Townsend St Forest (mile 56.4)?  This route does an out and back to nearly the same spot.

John's route also looks nice.  Some of the same, and a bit to the east. http://ridewithgps.com/routes/402894

discuss.

The Granit system has all E911 roads in NH and by using the various mapping and identity tools you can select a specific road segment.  Each road segment has data attached to it and lists whether it is paved or unpaved.

The best I have found is Garmin Basecamp.  I use it to layout dirt road rides.  It is pretty accurate, the dirt roads are dashed.

Wow! Thanks, Ned. That site looks amazing.

Steve, you can cut through at mile 56.4. There's a gate across a fire access road at the end of that cul-de-sac.

Massachusetts does have the same data at the link below.  However, it just will not show road surface type for municipal roads.  You would have to download the "shapefile" with that data.  I know its there - I have the file.  You just need a GIS system/software to use the data within the file.

just be careful with the GRANIT - some of the "roads" shown are Class 6 roads, which are not really maintained and may be subject to gating - even with gating its still a public right-of-way - but who really wants to argue with some yahoo about the finer legal points of the NH road classification system and RSA's

For a lower-tech Massachusetts solution, Jimapco's western Massachusetts map indicates dirt roads with dashed lines. I presume their other MA regional maps do the same.

Lambertus's routable bicycle map (Openfietsmap lite) also indicates dirt roads:

I've found it to be pretty reliable for my corner of western MA. I used it on D2R2 without a hitch.

Hi Steve,

This has been sitting in my Drafts for a couple of weeks, it seems. As the song says, who knows where the time goes?

Anyway, I just wanted to mention that, if you can get yourself to and from the NH border, I prefer this particular mix of roads in southern NH over the link you posted:

It will bring you past the surreal Yankee Siege and, if you're feeling energetic, you can also throw in a side-trip up and down Pack Monadnock (paved, but only kinda' sorta').

Oops! Sorry, that route does not bring you by Yankee Siege. My route that does has a Classics Road (Class VI, if you prefer) that involves some hike-a-bike, but the above flows better.
