Hello All,

Two 100k perms were just approved leaving from Dedham.

The first travels to Franklin, via Medway and Medfield from Dedham.  It returns through Wrentham, Foxborough, and Easton before returning to Dedham.  I rode this on Saturday and it's a pretty fast ride and heads through a nice section of Borderlands State Park on the way back to Dedham.  https://ridewithgps.com/routes/48914822

The second is a figure 8 with the center point in Holliston, MA and the westernmost point going to Milford.   I'll probably ride this in Dec or January and will send out a message here if anyone wants to join.  https://ridewithgps.com/routes/48923259

Best,

Jacob

The figure 8 ride closely parallels the Upper Charles trail for 7 1/2 miles from Milford to Holliston.  Would that be considered a legitimate alternative?  It would be a little slower than staying on rt 16 but a lot more relaxing without all that high speed traffic whipping by.

So long as you pass all the same control locations, any route you want to use is A-OK. Truth be told, I rarely use the route as designed for perms. (Even for my own perm submissions.) Just note you won't get extra finishing time if you add distance or dirt.

I sometimes put the route I rode in the RWGPS comments along with other info just in case others are looking for an alternative. I recommend other perm riders do the same if riding an alternative route that is nice.

I agree with Jake.  I'd originally planned on using the trail but for riders wanting to do the route in the winter months that could be challenging.

Since you can reduce the # of dirt KM but not increase them I wonder whether it's better to include the dirt in the route and then let people use the roads instead.

Personally, I'd prefer people do this so that riders get the dirt distance and time credit.

For a little inside baseball (inside cycling?) I have been pushing to modify the perm rules so that riders can add dirt distance when submitting their results without needing the perm to route to list that distance in advance. For others that feel the same way, please let RUSA know I'm not the only one interested in such a rule change.

The other thing I've done is put little RWGPS "POIs" somewhere along nice roads, to point them out as alternatives.   (And occasionally to point out something that looks tempting but is not fun.)   You can see my comments on this route: https://ridewithgps.com/routes/32926060  (And they didn't delete my link to the route page I put together with more notes (which was the "official" link back in the old perms program.)
