Hey NERds. Another year, another great Fleche! We had four teams, 14 riders start and all but one person finished. On Sunday we had a (IMHO) really nice brunch on a deck in Medford. It was the way a Fleche is meant to be. Collectively the teams passed through NY, RI, VT, NH, and MA.
Team "The tradition of all dead generations weighs like a nightmare on the brains of the living" had the longest name and the longest route. They took the Metro North train from NYC to Pawling, NY and rode from there. After brunch they took Amtrak back to NYC.
Team "Nick of Time" started at the other side of Massachusetts in Provincetown and rode the Cape with a stop in Providence, RI.
Team "Athols" took the dirt award by using about 20% unpaved roads and paths on their route.
Finally, team "Team Fleche Rippers, Quabbin edition" showed how to ride a Fleche in style: Stop at a bunch of breweries.
It's not hyperbolic to say most Fleche riders consider it to be their favorite Randonneuring event. If you haven't ridden a RUSA/ACP team event, it's worth a try. And in 2022 you have another chance!
NER is organizing another team weekend on Sept 24th. The finish is Brattleboro, VT. Tip: Hotels fill up fast so make reservations now and start planning your teams and routes. Brattleboro is a great spot as teams have lots of options for dirt, paved, flat, and hilly routes.
As an example, here is my Trace route from 2021 which used some notable features such as the Chesterfield Gorge and Satan's Kingdom. I might use the same route again for a Dart team:

In the Fall the options are a 360k Arrow (RUSA version of the Fleche; same rules), 200k Dart (13.5 hours), or 120k Dart Populaire (8 hours). More details on the NER Website.
