Just got a pre-missive email from the organizers of LEL.  Their 2021 website is up and running.  Also, for 100 pounds you can pre-register.  https://londonedinburghlondon.com

LEL informed me that pre-registration is open.  Here's the link I was provided:  https://londonedinburghlondon.com/enter#earlyentry

I'm not planning to do it, having done it twice, but I think in many ways it is better than PBP as everything is paid for with the entry fee: all food (and its good, buffets) and sleep (an air mattresss and blankets at all controls); and it is quite a bit more laid back: no qualifying rides and no bike check--and no sense of the race aspect of PBP.  The lack of the qualifying ride requirement and no bike check seems reflective of the quirky attitude I've found among many British riders: if you're zany enough to sign up for a 1400k without knowing what you're getting into, you're more than welcome--chuckles included.  Maybe that's an exaggeration but Brits seem easily amused by Americans and enjoy bandying teasing remarks.  Also, the volunteers everywhere treat you with soooo much more respect than I found, in general, prevalent on the Italian Alpi 4000 last year.

I put my name in, but it’s a sort of lottery so that doesn’t guarantee a spot on the ride, which is still two years in the future.

I'll second Jan's comments on LEL.  Though I DNFd at Thirsk on the way back south, it was a beautiful ride and fantastically well run event.  Looks like they added an extra 100k to the course for the next edition.  Yikers.

I'll never forget climbing Yad Moss on the return, or maybe I should try to...

Dear NERds,

I also received this in an email from the organizers.  The head organizer, by the way, Daniel (I forget his last name) was a volunteer at PBP and I when I saw him busing tables at the after ride dinner, I had to tease him:  "What? The organizer of the second greatest grand brevet in the world humbly waiting tables?"  Though there are hoops to jump through, Daniel is definitely dedicated to making LEL a wonderful event for as many as possible.  Chip, and everyone else, to increase your chances the best way looks like putting together a team.  So I infer from this email.  Can anyone name the team members pictured below?

I signed up for the early ballot and am waiting to hear but would be willing to join a team. But,  I’d be leery of any team that would have me as a member.  If anyone is interested let me know. John D’Elia 1146

I've been thinking about this one, too. Never considered doing it with a team before now. Would be interested in hearing from others about that possibility!

Curious if anyone successfully secured a spot using this early lottery? I signed up as an individual rider, and did not get a spot.

Wish I had been successful!  I wonder if applying as a team would have worked.

Also no luck. LEL is a much smaller event than PBP, so I expect the
demand greatly exceeds supply.

I remember when they took everyone and it was easy to get it. One thing to keep in mind is that most 1200ks fill up within
days of registration opening but spots open up as the event nears and people's plans change.

Given the current UK politics I wonder if anything is going to happen that throws a bit of a wrench (Brooks Spanner?) into
the works as the LEL start gets closer.

I've heard great things about some of the more exotic 1200ks. I'd love to ride one of the Korean events.

I lost out too. Surprised no one made it in. Possibly Brit riders are actually getting in first. Do the rules allow teams to form and apply now, even after the individual members of the newly formed team have been rejected? If so the solution is to form a team and reapply. Does that make sense? I really want to do this ride and would be willing to pay up now. John 1146.

The team thing adds a new dimension to the registration process, one
that I hadn't fully grasped when I signed up.

However, the event is almost two years in the future, and I think it's
safe to assume that at least some of the current registrants will have
to change their plans in the mean time. I recall a similar panic about
PBP being "full", but at this point I don't know of anyone who really
wanted to ride PBP but couldn't.

I was successful. Four days after applying, I received a confirming email along with a registrant number
