Hi NEPARC,

We were asked to share the following call for vertebrate roadkill data with our listserv.

------------------------------------------------------------------

CALL FOR VERTEBRATE ROADKILL DATA
The Geomatics and Landscape Ecology Research Laboratory (GLEL) at Carleton University, in collaboration with road ecologists worldwide, needs your help with an ongoing analysis of road mortality:

A Global Estimate of Road Mortality

Aim:
The aim of this project is to estimate the amount of vertebrate wildlife killed on roads across the world each year, to better understand the threat of roads to wildlife and identify species groups at risk, locations of high mortality, and inform management decisions.

To do so, we are collecting vertebrate road mortality data from all locations and on all vertebrate taxa (mammals, birds, reptiles, and amphibians or any subgroups).

What we are looking for:
Our team is collecting vertebrate roadkill data from published and unpublished sources. To be included in our study, a roadkill data source must include all of the following information:
  • Numbers of road-killed individuals, either all vertebrates, or all individuals of a vertebrate taxon or other vertebrate grouping (e.g. by body size), including individuals that could not be identified to species
  • Location(s) of survey or road(s)
  • Survey method
  • Length of road(s) surveyed
  • Date(s), time of day, and duration of survey(s)
  • Number of surveys and time interval between them (if multiple surveys were conducted)
  • If repeated surveys were undertaken at the same location on short time intervals, if and how the method accounted for roadkill counted in previous surveys (e.g. through carcass removal, marking previous carcasses, post-survey statistical adjustments).
Additional useful, but not required, information includes: precise location of roadkill, road surface, road width, number of lanes, and carcasses identified to species.

If you can provide data or have questions regarding whether your data meet the criteria, please reach out to: Aliso...@cunet.carleton.ca by April 30, 2024.
