We had a great meeting in January and it'd be great to get people
together again for some fun, food and politics!

At a recent neighborhood assembly planning meeting (open to everyone,
of course! Fridays, 11 AM at St. Francis), the idea was brought up
that we have a party rather than just another meeting. We're rollin'
with that idea. Meetings are serious and we need to have fun.

But we also want to use this gathering to encourage people to get
involved in neighborhood issues and to provide opportunities to do
so. To that end, we decided to focus on one issue and have guests
involved in that issue speak, answer questions and help us explore
ways we might come together as neighbors to address it.

The tentative topic decided on last week was food security and
community gardens. Lots of folks seemed interested in these issues at
the January 7th meeting, so it's as good a start as any! However, if
anyone has other ideas, feel free to speak up!

About planning:

The next planned NE Assembly was scheduled for the 18th, but that's
too short of a time frame to put together a good event. So, let's use
that day to get together, pool our resources and plan a party for
March, which will give us plenty of time to get the word out and
settle details.

We need a number of things for the party:

Food

Entertainment (probably music - though I seem to remember someone
mentioning puppets at the last big meet-up?!)

Special guests involved with food and community gardens

Space (there's a community center on NE Knott that was discussed)

ANYONE with any interest, insight or ideas in these areas, pretty
please help us plan this event and make it awesome! Let's do it! How
about meeting at the Chapel Pub on Killingsworth again from 3-5:00 on
Saturday, February 18th?

Hey Josh/Everybody!
This sounds like an awesome idea! I'm working on a project right now that I think would perfectly with this, maybe we could co-conspire?

I'm throwing a paper-making party on Friday (one of many to come), as a fun, craft oriented way to introduce people who are interested in making their communities better and more beautiful. The paper we make will be made with flower seeds, and out of it we'll make invitations to give out to our neighbors, inviting them to join us on June 21st for dinner and to discuss what issues and ideas are important to us as communities, in a fun, party atmosphere.

If our neighbors accept, they can plant the invitations and the seeds will grow, and this summer our neighborhoods will bloom with white flowers, as a reminder of the power we have to make our communities more beautiful when we work together.

Like I said, I'm planning on having the first party this Friday, the 10th. I don't at all mean to impose my idea onto the outreach party, but it seems like we're working on the exact same things, so let's team up! Anyone interested in coming can join the meetup group, and that way we can also stay in touch as this project evolves.

Also, I've been working the the Urban Farm Collective on this project, and might be able to ask one of them to come speak about urban farming at the party on the 18th? They're a non-profit collective that uses donated land to produce food on work-trade basis for their volunteers. It's pretty awesome.

Onward!
Sam

Yes, co-conspirators are needed! We should definitely team up. I
remember you talking about your project from a while ago - cool you've
got it going!

The urban farm collective definitely sounds like a good group to get
involved. I wonder what other groups would be good to invite? Food
Not Bombs maybe? It'd be nice to have representatives from
organizations that approach things from different angles: groups that
grow food, groups that distribute it, etc. But this is not an area of
expertise for me at all (I tend to kill houseplants and I'll admit it,
I eat junk), so I'm not familiar with too many of these types of
organizations. Maybe others have some ideas?
