Hey all,

Since housing was one of the concerns that was voiced at the first NE
GA, I was wondering if any of you would like to meet up and discuss
the topic? I'm thinking it would be informal, probably over coffee or
something. We could identify specific areas of concern and brainstorm
possible ways that our new GA might respond. If nothing else, it's a
chance to meet and get to know each other better.

Most late afternoons and evenings are good for me. I'm not sure if it
makes too big a difference whether it happens before or after the next
GA on Saturday. I maybe should've put this call out earlier, just in
case we end up with something to present to the assembly, but as you
all get to know me better, you'll learn that I'm sort of a space-
cadet, sooo.... there's that. hehe

Anyways, if anyone wants to get together, let's talk about it either
on this thread or through email. My mail is:
phase4...@clusterflux.org. My name's Josh. Once we get an idea of
how many folks want to meet, we can better plan where to get together.

Solidarity y'all

Josh

I am really interested in housing issues, since I have been working with Right 2 Survive and Right 2 Dream Too this fall. Let me know what night you plan on meeting and I will try to stop in.

I'm mainly interested in building intentional communities and supporting the NE neighborhoods with trade and production in a more sustainable way.

Enjoy yourself. This is of the utmost importance.

Occupy The Shelters

HELP THE HELPERS WORKING GROUP

Occupy Portland is committed to recognizing and coming to the assistance of the peoples and organizations who have been working to address those who are most afflicted by economic and social inequality, most notably the houseless.

Recently, due to the explosive increase in need, several churches in the Portland area have opened their spaces as shelters for the housless. To continue to offer their spaces as shelters, these churches are asking the community to join them in responding to the needs of the houseless.

Many of us who are involved with Occupy Portland believe that access to shelter is an inalienable human right. We of Occupy Portland want to make sure that the community understands our commitment to promoting a more compassionate world, a world in which the needs of the poverty stricken are acknowledged and met. Also, we want the community's trust that when we speak of "change", we intend to be the change we want to see in the world. No more waiting for politics to address poverty and houslessness.

Working together with the faith communities who have stepped up to shelter the housless, we can ensure that more of the housless in our city have access to shelter.

What they are requesting: Shelter hosts

This is an overnight commitment to host the shelter and its guests for the evening.

Evening routine looks like:

6:30 PM Occupy hosts arrive at shelter

7pm Open doors to let guests in for evening

7-9PM Guests will have access to shower and kitchen facilities

9pm Lights out

7am Wake up call

8am Clear and lock up shelter

Where/When: Beginning in February, Occupy the Shelters working group will be hosting every Thursday evening at Common Cup shelter. The shelter is located on 35th and se Yamhill.

Other Info

No less than two Occupiers are needed to host each Thursday.

The church provides an air mattress and sleeping space for the hosts as well, so no need to stay awake all night.

Occupy Portland is free to use the space for meetings during the hours of 7-9 so long as it doesn't conflict with our host duties.

Please connect with Elmira to get involved in this outreach project.

I think Occupy The Shelters is great in a bunch of ways and I will get in touch soon about doing the host thing.
Something else I've been thinking about is how to improve the quality of life for people who are houseless but for whatever reason don't really fit in with the homeless shelter thing.
I would love to hear peoples thoughts about starting a local chapter of Mad Housers or something similar. The Mad Housers is an all volunteer organization and they are set up as a non profit corp. Myself, I'm really crappy with buisness, legal, paperwork type stuff…*but* I do have all the tools and skils to build mini houses like what they build.

Check out Mad Housers on youtube here:

For an interesting discussion on housing tune into Lisa Loving's show on KBOO 90.7 8-9am Wednesday. She will be interviewing Ibrahim Mubarak who helped found Right 2 Dream Too.

Awesome ideas folks!

So, in the other 'thread' of this e-mail convo, there were ideas and
opportunities for showing support and solidarity with the houseless
community through traditional shelter support as well as working to
provide alternative shelter options along the lines of the "madhousers"
organization.

I'd also like to throw out there the idea of working with the - I suppose
you could say - 'precariously' housed members of our community, whether it
be homeowners in risk of foreclosure and/or eviction; renters with
unscrupulous landlords; etc. We could work on anything from education on
homeowners and tenant rights to eviction defense and anywhere in between
(or off to the side).

Re: intentional communities, I don't know much about them, but I should
mention that I will probably be doing some research on community land
trusts for a grant-writing course I'm taking, so if I could be of any help
in that respect, let me know!

Hope to see you all at the assembly Saturday!

I haven't been super paying close attention to this thread ( so sorry if repeating ),
but you might also check out this group
http://www.portlandgeneralassembly.org/groups/unsettle-portland/
they are doing some great work re: foreclosures

and you also might send an email to the solutions committee:
they have a subcommittee called "LAND" spinning up to talk about land ( and housing ) law reform.
