The Fargo Police Department to Hold News Conference on Release of Homicide Suspect

Tyrque Jones is being released from custody based on new information from the investigation

FARGO, NORTH DAKOTA – The Fargo Police Department would like to inform the public that Tyrque Jones (20-year-old Fargo resident) will be released from custody today from the Hennepin County Jail based on information gathered from interviews with Jones and further analysis of video related to the case. Information Jones provided to investigators helped to corroborate actions in the video and redirect the focus of the investigation to another individual as a potential suspect.

The Fargo Police Department will hold a news conference today at 11 a.m. in Gateway Commons at FPD Headquarters (105 25th St. N.) to provide information regarding the release of Jones and updates on the investigation. The news conference will be broadcast and livestreamed across the social media platforms of The Fargo Police Department and The City of Fargo, as well as The City’s access channels and TVFargo.com.

Pursuant to this morning’s news conference, Criminal Investigations Capt. Matt Christensen is providing the following updates:

In addition to the homicide warrant that has since been dismissed, Tyrque Jones was being held on other warrants as well and will be extradited to Cass County soon. He will be extradited on the charges of Terrorizing/Probation Violation (Case No. 09-2024-CR-02912), which is a separate matter from the homicide case.

In the early morning of Aug. 3, Tyrque Jones was spoken to by officers at the scene of the Elijah Hughes homicide in south Fargo. However, at the time officers spoke to Jones, the FPD did not have information to suggest Jones was involved in the downtown homicide of Azeem Holmes, and officers determined at the scene in south Fargo that Jones was not involved in the homicide of Elijah Hughes. Probable cause to support an arrest warrant for Jones in the homicide of Holmes was not established until much later in the day on August 3.
