University System to host summit on respect
BISMARCK, N.D. — The North Dakota University System will host a summit titled, “Creating an Atmosphere of Respect,” on Monday, May 19, at 9 a.m. in the Sakakawea Room at the State Capitol. NDUS Interim Chancellor Larry C. Skogen has been working with Scott J. Davis, Commissioner of North Dakota Indian Affairs, to organize the meeting and has extended invitations to university system leaders, tribal college leaders, students, and others.
“The appalling incident last weekend has highlighted that we have a long way to go in creating an atmosphere of respect for all cultures,” said Skogen. “This is not just a UND issue; it reflects on the entire university system. It’s time to start a conversation about developing appropriate responses to such incidents, and we intend to lead that effort.”
Skogen refers to offensive t-shirts that were created using an image similar to the University of North Dakota’s retired Fighting Sioux logo in connection with alcohol abuse. His statement regarding the incident may be found here: http://www.ndus.edu/news/detail.asp?newsID=229
