HE MADE ME GO TO SCHOOL
A nasty event was to happen in the my life after finishing Primary School in 1971. My uncle Fred, had a similar experience 10 years earlier in 1961. In the latter year, Fred had to drop out of Modern School due to lack of finance and parents’ low awareness, despite his high intelligence. In my own case too, my educational career nearly got terminated. I was on top my class in L.A. Primary School Umutu up to Primary six. But when it was time to go College, my dad felt that high school was expensive and a reserve for only the rich parents. Frankly, only the rich children were attending ‘College’ in those days at Umutu. He instructed that I was going to learn a trade, Tailoring to be precise. An “Agreement” had been sealed with a renowned Umutu Tailor, Delta Tailor and I was to commence the apprenticeship in January 1972, after the new year festivities. By stroke of luck, Fred was present in a family meeting at Umutu, during  the Christmas period, with my dad and brothers. In the meeting, Fred was vehement that I should be allowed to go to College and that those episode of his life should not be allowed to befall any academically-serious child of the family again. He encouraged my dad to send me to school and won the strong ensuing argument. At the end of the day my dad agreed and Tailoring was aborted. I was very happy. And my mother too! However, the provisos were that I would be a ‘Day Student’ and that my senior sister would stop her career after Primary School, for marriage. These were complied with, but I was happy going to college at last.

I went to St. George’s College Obinomba from 1973 to 1977 and it was a wonderful experience. From there and after five years, I moved to University of Lagos and the rest is now history. Today, a highly professional, First-Class, Engineer was made, all because of Fred’s persuasion and foresight. I owe him a lot and may his soul, rest in eternal peace. One wonders how many suits I would have sewn today as a Tailor to make an impact.

If you can make it, please join me in paying last respect and honour, to this great man.

Regards,

Engr. FE Ishie
For the Family.

Dear Engineer Fidelis Ishie,

Kindly permit me to mourn with you and your entire kindred over the sad loss of you uncle, Mr. Frederick Ishie. A couple of months back, we had already expressed our deepest condolences to Engr. Happy (Anwuli) Ishie via Facebook, but had to wait for an official announcement from you as family head in succession before commiserating with you publicly on this forum.

Please accept my condolences on behalf of the widows and children of the late Mr. Fred Ishie, your immediate family, and other relatives. We ask God Almighty to bestow his consolation and compassion on all those who are mourning and suffering at this time.

Finally, we also note your humble testimony of the positive role played by the late Fred Ishie in your life. In keeping with God's wisdom, it is important for us to also equally note that Engr. Happy Ishie followed directly on your footsteps, based on the positive wisdom that his father (Fred) brought to bear upon your life. This is how families prosper according to God's divine will. Therefore, may God Almighty remember the late Mr. Fred Ishie for good.

Once again, kindly accept my especial sympathies on behalf of your entire kindred.

May the soul of the faithful departed through the kind mercies of God rest in peace, Amen.

Yours sincerely,

Sylvester Ogbolu-Otutu

Nde imusumm,

It is with profound sense of personal loss and sadness of mind that I commiserate with the Ishie Family of Ebedei.

I have meticulously read the ode hereunder eruditely written (as he is wont to do) by Engineer Fidel, and I must say his submissions are very apt.

I met Uncle Fred for the first time in 1989 when as a then Law Student at Obafemi Awolowo University I came to spend some time at Ebedei-Uno with my grand parents, having been forced to go home due to student’s unrest.

Uncle Fred came to visit my Grand parents and on seeing me, felt very satisfied at not only my academic strides but that of my other brothers and sisters.

I remember him telling me that the only way we (Pen Ogbolu’s children) could do credence to the memory of our late father was through academic excellence.

After he had generously lavished some spirit lifting encomiums on my late father, he gave me the sum of =N= 5:00.

I was overwhelmed with joy, to the point of tears.

My joy was not only for the fact that I was then =N= 5:00 richer (any person who was a student in the 70s and 80s would appreciate what I am saying for this amount could feed one at Ife for five meals!) but I thanked God for making available at Ebedei, men who still valued and encouraged education.

This encounter with Uncle Fred has ever since left an indelible positive impression on me that the passage of time cannot obliterate.

Is it any wonder therefore that this man has begotten academic wiz kids like Happy Ishie?

I will personally miss Uncle Fred and always remember him with fondness.

As we bid good bye to this wonderful man, a man who showed love to man kind, a lover of education and as he transmutes  from mortality to immortality, I congratulate the Ishie family and Ebedei clan on being the source through which the world was blessed with so great a man.

It is my fervent prayers that God in his infinite mercies gives the entire Ishie family and indeed the Ebedei Community the fortitude to bear this colossal and irreparable loss

Dear Engr Fidel Ishie,

Your late uncle touched many lives positively and he was very hardworking, his brother Ashanti also shares the same spirit of industry, accomodation and friendliness. Both of them were like fathers to me in those days back in Ebedei - Uno that is why my wife will represent me by the grace of the Most High Yahweh come Saturday since I am tied up with some exigencies. I sincerely mourn with your good self, Engr Happy, Ishie family, Umunyalum, Ebedei and Ukwani as a whole in this time. May his gentle soul rest in peace and the Almighty give the family the fortitude to bear the huge loss.

My Dear Engr. and total Ishie Family,

My family and I commensurate with the entire Ishie family on this great loss. It's so disheartening to hear that Uncle Fred is gone. I saw him last at Ebedei Uno in 2011 when I was a member of those that follow Hon. Ned Nwoko to campaign at Ebedei Uno. When we retired to Engr. Fidel Ishie's village home.

That was the day I saw Happy's Father. May his soul rest in peace.

Adios Uncle Fred!!!
