Dear NDD colleagues,

Below please find a new sign on opportunity for organizations to weigh in on the forthcoming budget resolutions in Congress, being circulated by the Coalition on Human Needs with the support of the Clean Budget Coalition, Save for All Campaign, and NDD United. This is an overarching budget letter that addresses not only nondefense discretionary spending but also entitlements and revenue.

We urge you to sign your organization on to make a strong statement in favor of a fair budget!

Subject: [Big Table] please circulate budget sign-on letter to big table list

Big Table Colleagues:

Please sign and broadly circulate a joint federal budget letter from local, state, and national organizations (to read and sign, click here).
Deadline:  Monday, June 12.

We are reaching out to you to join us in a broad budget effort to urge Congress to support a budget that creates better economic opportunities to benefit all Americans, to invest in essential public services, protect our environment, and to fight harsh program cuts that will hurt all Americans, with disproportionate harm to low-income and vulnerable people.  As the release of the Trump and House budgets get closer (Trump budget due out May 23), more and more troubling reports are coming out about drastic cuts to Medicaid, SNAP/food stamps, and income assistance to the poor and people with disabilities – on top of earlier proposals to slash environmental protection, housing, insert ideological policy riders, and much more.

This is an effort to join together to push back against the priorities of the House and Senate majorities and the Trump Administration. This is not a new coalition, but an effort to coordinate the efforts we are all engaged in to be as effective as possible. We have been coordinating with the Clean Budget, NDD, and SAVE for All Coalitions and would welcome coordination with additional coalitions. We are also working with SiX, the State Innovation Exchange, to partner with progressive state elected officials and their Republican colleagues where helpful to participate in press events and earned media, including locally placed op-eds.

We need your help to sign the letter and circulate it to your networks.   Here is text you can put in an email to your networks (certainly feel free to re-order or modify the examples of cuts, or to change other wording to be most helpful to your networks):

Subject Line:  Stand Together to Stop Dangerous Budgets

Trump and Ryan Budgets:  Cuts will Target the Poor, the Planet, and Our Future

Local, Statewide and National Organizations:  Sign a Letter Telling Congress to Stop the Cuts
Click here to read and sign
Deadline:  June 12

President Trump is expected to release his full budget for FY 2018 on May 23.  The House Budget Committee will follow in early to mid-June.  The Trump Administration has released some of its plans, including a $54 billion cut next year in cutting education, environmental protection, public health, job training, housing and home heating assistance for low-income people, international food aid, legal services for the poor and many other important services.  Now there are reports that both the Trump and Ryan budgets will cut hundreds of billions of dollars out of essential programs like Medicaid (on top of the proposed $800-plus billion in Medicaid cuts in the health care repeal bill), the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP/food stamps), and other income assistance for poor people with disabilities and/or poor families.  The Trump Administration has already announced its intention to cut taxes by $5.5 trillion or more over ten years and to increase funding for the Pentagon.

Groups that care about a broad range of federal investments are joining together to sign and circulate this letter.  This is a time we must unite and show Congress that groups representing millions of constituents will work together to fight these cuts.  Signing this letter is an important way to show we are standing together.

Note:  in addition to the national letter text, there are state letters for Alaska, Delaware, Indiana, Maine, Missouri, Montana, Nevada, New Jersey, New York, Ohio, Pennsylvania, Washington and West Virginia (similar, but with state-specific facts).  If you are in one of these states, you’ll be directed to your state’s letter when you click here

We ask that you join with us to:

·         Sign a national sign-on letter expressing these budget priorities and share this message with your networks to encourage other organizations to sign.

·         Help us on the ground. As a start, we are organizing on the ground in AK, DE, FL, IN, ME, MO, MT, NJ, NV, NY, PA, WA, and WV.  Please let us know if your staff/affiliates are available to help coordinate organizing efforts on the ground.

·         Encourage your local affiliates and partners to sign state letters in the above-mentioned states that are tailored to include examples of the proposed cuts in each state, spanning a broad range of programs.

·         Engage in social media strategies to inform members, the public, and the press about the devastating impact of the President’s budget. We will develop template letters to the editor, opinion editorials

·         Coordinate local events and meetings to show the broad-based opposition to the proposed cuts.

If you have any questions, please contact Debbie Weinstein at dwein...@chn.org, 202.223.2532 x111; or Becky Levin, ble...@afscme.org, 202.429.1184.
