Hope everyone has a Happy Thanksgiving amongst family and good friends.

If you are on this distribution and happen to be coming to the SF Bay Area this weekend for the ND @ Stanford football game, please know you are most welcome to join us at our Tailgate Saturday afternoon.  My wife Susan (SMC '72) and I have been doing this for a couple decades and have seen it grow into a cast of hundreds.  Amongst the local ND community its now referred to as the Official Unofficial  ND/Stanford Tailgate.  

This year we will be joined by the ND Men's Rugby 15s traveling squad and coaches.  Our team will square off against Stanford on Sunday afternoon at 2:00.  First match in what is to be an annual Fall fixture in conjunction with the football game between the two universities.

If you will be here and would like to attend shoot me an email at this address and I will send you a map so you will find us with no difficulty.  Our site is prime; less than a 5 minute walk to the stadium.  Don't worry about bringing anything beyond a healthy thirst and appetite.  We've got it covered.

If you aren't coming this year, put it on your bucket list and come out here in 2019.  Go IRISH!

If you are on this distribution and happen to be coming to the SF Bay Area this weekend for the ND @ Stanford football game, please know you are most welcome to join us at our Tailgate Saturday afternoon.  My wife Susan (SMC '72) and I have been doing this for a couple decades and have seen it grow into a cast of hundreds.  Amongst the local ND community its now referred to as the Official Unofficial  ND/Stanford Tailgate.  

This year we will be joined by the ND Men's Rugby 15s traveling squad and coaches.  Our team will square off against Stanford on Sunday afternoon at 2:00.  First match in what is to be an annual Fall fixture in conjunction with the football game between the two universities.

If you will be here and would like to attend shoot me an email at this address and I will send you a map so you will find us with no difficulty.  Our site is prime; less than a 5 minute walk to the stadium.  Don't worry about bringing anything beyond a healthy thirst and appetite.  We've got it covered.

If you aren't coming this year, put it on your bucket list and come out here in 2019.  Go IRISH!

If you are on this distribution and happen to be coming to the SF Bay Area this weekend for the ND @ Stanford football game, please know you are most welcome to join us at our Tailgate Saturday afternoon.  My wife Susan (SMC '72) and I have been doing this for a couple decades and have seen it grow into a cast of hundreds.  Amongst the local ND community its now referred to as the Official Unofficial  ND/Stanford Tailgate.  

This year we will be joined by the ND Men's Rugby 15s traveling squad and coaches.  Our team will square off against Stanford on Sunday afternoon at 2:00.  First match in what is to be an annual Fall fixture in conjunction with the football game between the two universities.

If you will be here and would like to attend shoot me an email at this address and I will send you a map so you will find us with no difficulty.  Our site is prime; less than a 5 minute walk to the stadium.  Don't worry about bringing anything beyond a healthy thirst and appetite.  We've got it covered.

If you aren't coming this year, put it on your bucket list and come out here in 2019.  Go IRISH!

I hope the tailgate was better than the fourth Q of the game. Drop from #3 to #15 in two weeks – hard to fathom and very disappointing. It was right there for us – complete control of our destiny and our offense does not show up in the 2 biggest games of the year. If Josh Adams isn’t hurt, he must be playing not to get hurt for his NFL aspirations – so hesitant, completely different back than earlier in the year. Five years since we have won a game on the road, against a ranked opponent, at night and on national TV – Oklahoma in 2012. Have to be better. Sorry for the rant.

Lads, a happy Thanksgiving to all of you.

 

I was thinking of the last spoken words of the Stephen King short story, "Stand by Me." It was made into a movie with River Phoenix and narrated by Richard Dreyfuss. At the end he  speaks of friendship and signs off by saying, "The best friends are those you make when you are twelve years old."

 

Very true. 

 

However, we were much more than twelve when we met as Notre Dame men and rugby players. But, we so often acted like twelve-year old boys, the quote and meaning behind it surely apply. I am a happier and better man for having you as friends. Thank you.

I enjoy the bantering back and forth from all of the ruggers, most of whom I have never met.

 

Since I was at the ND vs Stanford rugby match on Sunday, I thought that I would share with you some observations if I may.  The ruggers played with a lot of energy with the forwards pushing Stanford around and also controlling the lineouts.  The backs looked much faster than Stanford. The kicking game was excellent.

The ruggers controlled the scrum throughout the match and that control contributed to many trys.

 

I also met 2013 ND ruggers e.g. Sean Peterson (Fly-Half), Rob Manfreda (Back), Dan...(Flanker) and Dr. Victor... (second row and lock).  Sean and Victor are working in the area while Rob is attending the MBA program at Stanford.  Dan was visiting from Chicago.

It was a fun time at the match since it was raining until about the middle of the first half, and then cleared.

 

As an aside, Phil Calandra held a tailgate on Saturday where the NDRFC players were present. Many thanks to Phil and his wife Susan for hosting.

 

This match is quite memorable for yours truly, as Ken Stinson, who was present at one of the tailgates on Saturday, and I were on the ND rugby team that traveled to Stanford in the Spring of 1964 or more than 53 years ago.  We did fly (for those that believe we traveled via stage coach) and paid our own way (unlike today).  This was the first match vs Stanford since 1964 to the best of my recollection.

The ND Rugby Committee e.g. Founder Bob Mier and others) had connections wherein we stayed at a Stanford fraternity house and were fed with a training table for the entire week.  We also had an Alumni connection who provided us with Mercury vehicles (that was way more trust than expected).  We played on a pitch which was mostly dirt and a little grass, near the current Steuber Rugby Stadium, on what is now a field hockey turf field.  Stanford had about a quarter to a third of their team as graduate students from rugby playing countries e.g. England i.e. Wales, London, and South Africa etc.  We lost but learned a tremendous amount of rugby technique.  We then traveled south to play in the Monterey Bay rugby tournament which was the end of the West Coast rugby season and only the beginning of our season.  We played hard and did fairly well considering our inexperience.  While I do not recall the outcomes of those matches, I do remember a play by our left prop Dick Bell, who kicked a loose ball off of the chest of a USC player and got called for a dangerous play.  He was thrown out of the game and as was the rule at that time, we then played a man short for the remainder of the match.  YIKES!  Dick was an aeronautical engineering major and subsequently became a priest (I think).  How ironic!

Another memory is that we had a dinner hosted by Ken Stinsons’ parents in Millbrae, CA.  I had forgotten about it, until someone showed me a photo of us at the Stinson’s home.

 

When we returned to ND with all of that experience, we went something like 25-1 for the Spring of 1964, Fall of 1965 and Spring of 1965.

Our only loss was to the St. Louis Bombers ( a semi-pro team) who we subsequently beat later in the Spring of 1965 at ND.

Lads, I know we all have divergent opinions about this sort of thing, and most likely our past behavior has no place in the modern game. But I wanted to pass along a couple emails from the Lads that played with my brother Tom, and the events that led to the Outside Irish. I also want to laud the work kids like Don Greiwe's progeny (Don Jr?) did to keep the club going. I met Tiny, from that club at the Aspen Ruggerfest, and can attest that they are wonderful Notre Dame men. I loved the bawdy aspect of rugby, and lament its passing. I have redacted any real names, nicknames are fair game! ====

Your e-mail brought a smile to my face.

This fine establishment in Houston was known as Muldoon’s (I think). After we got crushed by Texas A&M, we all congregated at Muldoon’s for the usual drink up and festive singing. Following the fine Irish tradition that was established way before I wore an Irish Rugger jersey, we decided to elephant walk………………on top of and across the bar….kinda like old Corby days.

We didn’t know that a friend of Mr. Haggar (yes, that Haggar of Haggar slacks and huge ND donor) was present and decided to give Mr. Haggar “a ration” regarding this display. Well, Mr. Haggar did not take too kindly to our efforts of sportsmanship and “asked” that we all be expelled from ND or (so I am told) his future donation(s) would go away.

Apparently this was presented to the ND board and a priest on the board (who would not reveal his name) stopped all “negotiations” when supposedly he said, “I played rugby for a number of years in the 60’s, and I can’t count on my two hands, how many elephant walks I participated in. We can’t kick these boys out.”

So we were able to stay enrolled and graduate. The unknown rugger was none other than Sean “Mole” Sullivan.

Bowman, thanks again for showing your support, now as well as 37 years ago.

Trust all is well with everyone. The ND class of ’80 always brings back fond memories.

Love to have the opportunity to reminisce about old times with you guys. Perhaps at a future Rugby alumni game?

PS – In 1985 I played in a rugby tournament in Houston. I took a few of my teammates to Muldoon’s as sort of a “walk down memory lane”. After introducing myself to the owner and reminding him of the elephant walk, he said that was one of the best moments in Muldoon’s history. He let us drink for free for the remainder of the night.

Team - Holy cow, look what I found attached! I have been looking for a most hilarious letter that Dean Wormer wrote me in 1981. Allow me to set the stage....

Our beloved elephant walk was a standard at any rugby party. Or even Corby's if we were feeling it. I remember our little walk stopped traffic at the University of Dayton. I believe we all had fun participating and enjoying the camaraderie even if the likes of sad sack Ass would say, "I didn't walk. I watched your guyses clothes".

Well the Rico-led Irish ruggers enjoyed the Elephant walk in a tavern in Houston during 1981's spring break. Yet another sad sack alum was in the bar and, if I'm getting this right, blabbed to Dean Wormer his disgust with the spectacle. 30 of the 31 players were hauled in front of the Dean and summarily dismissed from the team. The one who didn't get dismissed was on crutches and couldn't participate (lousy excuse).

Upon hearing this dreadful news, I felt obliged to send the good Dean a letter of protest. Umm, my typing and letter writing skills have always been suspect but I gave it my best shot. As I recall I wrote that the punishment was too extreme, the Elephant Walk was always a grand and noble tradition treasured by all who participated, all in good, healthy fun, never hurt anyone, etc.

His attached response starts with "Thank you for your recent undated
letter". And it just goes downhill from there.

Hey Rico - Can you elaborate on what happened? As none of us know who the unknown rugger was walking in front of a very excited Joe Slow, can you identify the rugger on crutches?

I gotta believe that Dean Wormer had the most thankless job on campus.
