Cant believe a guy at 40 died from  the virus,  so  sad.  God Bless him and his family.


First I heard no  college until January,  got to believe that is the most conservative view and , hopefully, not real.
I believe we cannot cave to  this thing to  such a drastic extent.
If  the economy doesnt open soon The Law Office of Chet Zawalich LLC  might be headed to  BK  court,  if  the BK courts are still open !

Hey if  Harvard can get a PPP  Loan maybe I can .


I can report I went to the Bengal Bouts 90th anniversary function at  the end of February,  true,  90th year of  the Bengal Bouts. A Holy Cross priest was a finalist in  the heayweight division.
The function was held in O'Neill Hall, had no  idea where it was until I went.  It is the new building attached to the south end of  the stadium.  Calling it swank doesnt do it  justice.

Hi Guys,

I think the last Rugby Group email was from Phil Calandra on 2/17, and I, for one, miss getting these updates.  Without ND sports, and rugby news to discuss, I guess not much to report.

 I hope everyone, your families, friends, and work colleagues are all safe and well. My family and I are well, but sadly, one of my partners in NYC died last week from the virus.  Only in his 40’s, with two young children.  Makes me realize how fortunate and blessed we are.

Hearing a lot of confusing and uncertain news about when colleges will re-open, fall sports, etc.  Another partner of mine who does a fair amount of NCAA enforcement work, reported on a conference call yesterday that the consensus he hears building is that schools won’t reopen until January, with no fall sports.  Could blow a huge hole in athletic department budgets, let alone institution budgets.  Curious what others are hearing.

Working remotely, as virtually everyone is, and keeping fairly busy, which leads me to a request:

Is anyone on list a real estate attorney in New Mexico?  Of can you recommend one?  Working on a solar development project, and in need of a local NM real estate attorney.

Sorry to hear about the losses people are experiencing.  I think this thing is no joke.  I live in ATLANTA and this week our governor is opening barber shops, massage parlors, Beauty and nail salons and tattoo parlors.  Will be interesting to see social distancing in those businesses.

My other daughter, Christine, is 8 months pregnant so that’s also a major worry. She now lives in your old stomping ground of Glenview as does my son,Morgan, and his family.

Morgan has approached this like a survivalist so I am confident in his precautions and his proclivity to act like a Guardian Angel for us all.

For entertainment, I kept a lot of the better international matches on tape and, with an old timer memory, they’re brand new to me every time I watch them!! I’ve also finally finished all the required reading for my senior year in the General Program!! Better late than never. As a quick aside, this was the year of my 50th Reunion, but that probably wouldn’t be a good idea since everyone is in the old fart target zone for the disease.

Like Nick, I was really looking forward to the trip to Ireland for rugby and football (or “gridiron” as they call it) and helping Pat Steenberge and his company,Global Football, to pull it off. All credit to Pat and Coach Justin Hickey for working so very hard to put this together and I can only hope it eventually happens.  

I love you all and wish everyone and their friends and family the very best of health and good fortune!!!

Greetings from The Western Front,

Hey, I'm three hours younger than most of you since moving to San Diego from Atlanta  five year ago.   Be careful out there Eddie. Carole and I sent 40 years in the ATL and know how crowded things can get.  Last time I checked a good massage was well within six feet, and six feet is way too close to any tattoo joint.

All going pretty well maintaining our Pacific Beach space station - like a cruise ship but safely without the passengers:  free cocktails, long walks, a putting green, old movies, and seven meals a day...  We celebrated Carole's birthday and another wedding anniversary last week with Champagne, 007 Quarantinis, and a classy delivery dinner from French Gourmet just 2 blocks away.  Governor Newsome has had us on fairly strict lockdown for 38 days (but who's counting?)!  Looking forward to the golf courses, or at least the local driving range, to re-open soon as my clubs have been rattling in the closet.  

San Diego is home to 130 craft breweries, and dozens of bio-medical research operations, both anti-viral.  Scripps Green adjacent to Torrey Pines GC, is a top 10 hospital near nearby, and seems to be performing bravely and well through this pandemic.  Good news is that I had a colonoscopy scheduled next week.  Better news is that it has been postponed until late July.  I have no further questions.

Sadly, seeing some doubtful predictions for college rugby/football this fall, with no student body, no team sports, but not a done deal yet.  Meanwhile, sorry to see Muffet McGraw stepping down today.  After 33 years and two damn fine National Championships, she has been the best ND coach on campus for quite awhile.  Thank you Muffet!

* if you purchase a computer, it goes to India, Taiwan, or China.

* if you purchase fruits and vegetables, it will go to Mexico, Honduras, and Guatemala.

* if you buy an efficient car, it will go to Japan or Korea.

* if you purchase useless stuff, it goes to Taiwan.

* if you pay your credit card off or buy stock, it will go to management bonuses and they will hide it offshore.

 

Instead, keep the money in America by:

 

(1) Spending it at a yard sale, or

(2) Going to a local rugby match, or

(3) Spending it on prostitutes, or

(4) Beer, or

(5) Tattoos

(These are the only American businesses still operating in the U.S.)

 

CONCLUSION: Go to a match with a tattooed prostitute (WOW MOM WOW) that you met at a yard sale and drink beer all day.

In case it hasn't made it up to the elder rugby alumni yet, we lost a great rugger and friend last week. I've known Zac since high school and he made an immeasurable impact both at ND and afterward leading the Kraken alumni team to many victories. His father played football at ND, class of '86, and his brothers also graduated from ND. Tyler is currently working in the football operations team.

NOTRE DAME COMMUNITY MOURNS THE LOSS OF ZAC PLANTZ Thursday, November 26, 2020   This year's Thanksgiving holiday quickly turned from celebration to devastation and mourning, as the University of Notre Dame community learned of the tragic passing of Zac Plantz '15 and for the Rugby Football Club at the University of Notre Dame.... Zac had a larger than life personality and a smile that lit up up the room. He never shied away from a sarcastic remark or an opportunity to rib a teammate or friend. But whether Zac was challenging a teammate or pushing himself, he always had the best interest of the team at heart. Zac poured himself into the club as he did with anything he was passionate about, with his whole heart. He cared deeply for his teammates and friends, the club he led and the University he represented. Zac was a gifted athlete and a fierce competitor on the field, but it was the sense of community that the rugby club provided that he loved so much. The rugby club was very special to Zac and meant the world to him during his time at Notre Dame and after his time in South Bend. After graduating in 2015 Zac continued playing rugby with Kraken RFC, a touring club formed by a collection of former NDRFC members and soon became the driving force that has kept the club thriving each summer, taking the lead on competition scheduling and off field event planning. Zac's galvanizing personality bridged the gap between current students and recent graduates and those who graduated before his time at Notre Dame. Zac will be remembered as a kind man who gave so much of himself and lived to serve others. For the month of November, Zac set a goal of running 60 miles and raising $1,000 to benefit "Movember" supporting the organization's mission to positively impact men's mental health & suicide prevention along with prostate & testicular cancer. Before his passing, Zac had exceeded his goal and raised the bar to $2,000. At present time, nearly  $80,000 has been raised in Zac's name, making him the #1 fundraiser in the United States and #3 worldwide. This remarkable act speaks volumes for what Zac meant to so many, and the impact he had and continues to have on this world. Zac was dearly loved, and he will be sorely missed. Zac is one of three brothers who played rugby at Notre Dame. Tyler ('14) and Logan ('18) also played on the football team, and all three competed in the Bengal Bouts. Zac's sister Abrielle is a student at St. Mary's College. Zac's mother Laura is a St. Mary's College Alumnus ('86) and his father Ron ('86) played football at Notre Dame. WELL…it has been quite awhile since I have heard from some of you Veteran ruggers from the early 1970’s.  I seems like merely a few years ago when all of you were playing Club rugby for the Notre Dame Rugby Football Club (NDRFC).  Your sharing of memories of your time there is truly appreciated

 

Just a heads up but after more than year on the long and hard road to recovery from some health issues, I plan to return to ND for The Ohio State University weekend with a NDRFC mini-reunion to boot for September 21-24, 2023.

 

Plse introduce yourselves to this old-timer at the rugby tailgate on Saturday 09/23/2023 or on Friday evening 09/22/2023 if there is a rugby match vs Ohio State.
