Great suggestions Phil, thanks, and Greetings from Wales 🏴󠁧󠁢󠁷󠁬󠁳󠁿
I’ll be in Dublin from Oxford on Thursday the 24th, checking into Trinity College accommodations for 3 nights. Plan to be at the 🏉 matches on Friday.  Landsdowne Hotel sounds like the place to be on Saturday afternoon.
Was in Dublin for the 2012 gridiron and can vouch for your take on pre-game logistics. Get there early!

I have a spare football game ticket if anyone is in the market. ☘️

Subject: Meet Up Option for ND Rugby Alumni Heading To DUBLIN

Greetings All,

I've been in Dublin for 3 recent Six Nations Rugby match days and can tell you that when Aviva Stadium is sold out, the 3-4 hours leading up to kickoff can be chaotic. You don't want to get stuck on the other side of town with only an hour or two to go before kickoff because transit options will be slim or none.  With a 7:30 kickoff, I think you really want to get within easy walking distance of the stadium no later than 4 pm.

The University is encouraging everyone to party pregame in the Temple Bar (tourist) district, then hoof it behind the ND Band to the Stadium.  Sounds epic, but IMHO it's a fool's errand unless the weather is absolutely perfect and so are your ankles, knees and hips!  Depending on where you are in Temple Bar, it's at least a 2-mile hike to Aviva, with no realistic public transit options.  Thank you - no!

I've attached a list of "Notre Dame Official Tailgating Bars" put out recently by the University.  I've annotated the list with locations.  The last one on the list, The Lansdowne Hotel, is my pick as the best bet for pregame gathering. I spoke with them today and they plan to open the Bar at noon or 1 pm.  No food service inside, but likely a BBQ outside selling burgers, etc.

My recommendation is to have a square meal/lunch wherever is convenient to where you are staying and then head to Ballsbridge, the stadium area. ETA for my posse arriving at the Landsdowne Hotel will be around 3:30 pm.  I've invited some Football alumni too and we plan to hang there for a couple hours and then head to the stadium area which is only a 1/2 mile trek away.

Anybody interested in getting together Friday night for a nightcap or two, please lmk..  Take a look at the attached list.   Depending on your location, J.T. Pims or Peader Kearney's might work.  They are both centrally located in City Center and a bit away from the Temple Bar madness.

Also don't forget - Friday at 4 pm, ND Rugby vs Navy on the College Park pitch at Trinity College.  Go IRISH!.  See you in Dublin!

Cheers,
Phil

Hi guys I’m davie played 2006/2010. From Ireland and back living here. Some of you will know me from hosting an alumni rugby match against my team here last time around in 2012. We were hoping to get something going again but couldn’t generate enough numbers to organize. So now it’s just pints. With that in mind lemme fire a few recommendations around

Traditional Dublin pubs the best in the world. Here’s 10 central ones well worth your time.
The long hall
Mulligans poolbeg st
Stags head
Dame tavern
Foggy dew
Mcdaids
Kehoes
The palace
Cassidy’s on Camden st
O donohoes baggot street

Temple bar is very touristy and 40% more expensive. You won’t see any actually Irish people there. Worth a wander through but I wouldn’t say worth staying. Also better to stay south of the river for any activities. It’s nicer and safer.

Round the stadium there are a couple of areas with bars. We don’t do tailgating in Ireland though they may set up some sort of fan area. Opposite the rds in ballsbridge is a strip of bars a 5 min walk to the stadium and will be very popular. Likewise where bath avenue meets shelbourne road on other side of stadium there’s Slatterys chop house and beggars bush all will be places people stop on way to stadium.

They are pedestrianizing dame street by trinity college for the band and it’s about a 20/25 min walk to stadium.

If you need a pit stop on the way my buddies bar is called moss lane on pearse street which is the route to stadium. he has a great selection of whiskeys and is very keen to see and host nd guys. We will be stopping over there to watch the all Blacks v South Africa match after the nd rugby in trinity friday night all are welcome. It’s directly opposite trinity.

Any questions about planning stuff or things to see around Ireland feel free to ask here or email directly.

Hello Davie,

Mitch Wilkes here from San Diego and flying over from Oxford this afternoon, staying at Trinity College.  I was the ND Rugby 🏉 fullback 1973/75 ☘️

Good info below and hope to see you at the match Friday afternoon or Moss Lane.  What are the two oldest and most traditional pubs on your list please?  Also, kindly advise the address for Slattery’s Chop House - sounds like a good spot for dinner 😎

Ah no you want to move away from stadium for dinner. It’ll be chaos. Best steakhouses in town are the fx buckleys. They have their own farms and butchers so it’s amazing. Well worth visiting and they have a few locations.
My top three of those bars are long hall then kehoes then mulligans. Great old timey bars that look like they did 150 years ago. The rumor is that mulligans have the best Guinness in Dublin.
