The ND Men's Rugby Alumni Advisory Committee met at ND Saturday morning and one of the items decided was that the 2017 Rugby Reunion will be held in conjunction with either the GEORGIA or USC football weekends.  If you would like to vote for one or the other please make your choice known to me and I will keep a tally.

 

I know the fact  there is an ND Men's Rugby Alumni Advisory Committee has not been properly communicated to you the  very constituency we are supposed to be representing.  I apologize for that even though it would have been clearly defined and communicated to you 9 months ago had I been granted my wish.

 

I'm running today, on my way from ND to Chicago for Workday Rising.  I'd love to give you guys a full report today but I'm a lousy typist and don't have time.  Expect a couple interesting things from me later in the week.

 

One will be a summary report on Saturday's Committee meeting.  Second will be a report on our ND Rugby Programs' recently signed alliance with the Irish Rugby Football Union (IRFU).  I think you will find especially the latter fascinating.

I watched the men play . fit , physical pack,  running to the ball all match , big, strong backs..passed the ball to the wings and brought it back inside !  killed Dayton and had them wore out by half time.

Whatever else is  going on under the Dome,  I can happily say the rugby program appears strong and prospering.

The good news is  that the rugby team won Friday night. They were up 26 – 0 at the half and won 41 – 19. Looked good  – strong pack and good tackling –unlike what we see in that other contact sport on campus. Good turnout for the match – saw Don McDermott, Phil Calandra, Rich Campagna and some younger guys that played with my brothers.

 

Don’t know where to start with the Irish. The D cannot stop simple counter and dive plays, cannot get a pass rush, cannot cover even in a zone and tackling is atrocious, - bad angles, no wrapping up and looking for the kill shot rather than bringing guys to the ground. That said there were several plays yesterday where there were 7 first year starters on D and 6 were true freshman – 2 safeties, corner, nickel, LB and DE – some of whom I think will be very good . That recruiting gap falls on Kelly. The offense scores 35 points and has 5 turnovers and a missed FG that turns out being the difference in the game. I think Duke actually stopped ND twice on drives. All the others were ND shooting themselves in the foot. Plus at least two or three stupid penalties by the D that prolonged Duke drives. Not much improvement in sloppy play that Kelly lamented last week.  At some point that is on Kelly and his staff also.

I do agree with what he said yesterday that the players have to be accountable. If they rep something all week and kids don’t execute, the players have to play. These last two games are vintage Charlie Weiss – we have regressed that far – a lot of points but enough dumb plays to lose a close game. Kelly’s record of  8 – 5, 8-5, 12-1, 9 – 4, 8-5 and 10 – 3 for six seasons is not enough with no signature wins except for OU in 2013. ND’s bar should be much higher and Kelly knows that – he has to get it done.

 

Murph and I are still in for the weekend. God help us if we have not learned to tackle by then. GO IRISH!!

               I guess that Lee , Don and I do not have to save our guest rooms for ND friends coming to Tampa for the National Championship Game next January. It has been a pretty depressing season so far, especially having to listen to Doug Flutie on TV.  For those that attended the Rugby Reunion match on Friday night, I hope that it went better than the game yesterday. At least Rugby Players know how to tackle and take correct angles at the sidelines.

 

               This email is to update everyone on the Notre Dame-Navy weekend plans in Jacksonville, FL on November 4 to 6. So far I have CONFIRMATIONS FROM:

                              Margo Kelly (2), Lee Pallardy (2), Joe Hafner (2), Dave Simpson(2), Bob Olsen (1), Ed O’Connell (2), Chris Byrd (1), Tom Masenga (1), Peter Frantz (1)

                              TO BE CONFIRMED:  Don Greiwe, Dan Lee, Jerry Razer, Chet Z, Bill Seetch,   (Herb Giorgio responded that he cannot attend due to a family wedding).

 

               Hotel Reservations:   Margo has reserved a group of hotel rooms as noted below in the previous emails.    As of September 10^th, Margo said that the hotel has reservations from Pallardy, Hafner, Byrd, Simpson,  Masenga and Olsen. If you have made the reservations, I would suggest calling the hotel again to confirm them. They do not seem to be very bright and appear to be easily confused. You will need to give them Margo Kelly’s cell phone number  904-477-4709  and the confirmation number is  # 86635893.  I believe that there are 10 rooms left in the block at the reduced rate.  The hotel will want the uncommitted rooms back soon, so if you do not have a reservation, please make one this week. 

 

               Fishing and Golf:  So far Chris Byrd and Pete Frantz have indicated an interest in playing Golf on Friday afternoon -please confirm and whether or not you will need golf clubs?  For the Fishing, it will probably be early on Friday morning which will require getting into Jacksonville on Thursday sometime. If you want to go fishing on Friday morning, please email Lee Pallardy this week to confirm at  l...@leepallardyinc.com  or call Lee at cell phone number 813-355-6274. Reserving guides is not a last minute option so we need to confirm a head count this week. Lee will also need anyone that is going to fish to send him a current email address and cell phone number because fishing often has last minute weather adjustments. No fishing licenses are required with a Guide. The cost will be determined by how many people go, number and size of the boats, etc. Lee can confirm those details once he knows how many people want to go.

 

               Friday Evening 11/4/16 : Margo  and Mike Kelly are going to host a party at their home in Jacksonville.  Time and details will be sent to those who are signed up for the Weekend.

 

               Saturday Evening – 11/5/16:  The football game is scheduled for 11:30 am on Saturday.  We are going to try to reserve a restaurant or club for dinner on Saturday night. Again, once we get a final head count, we can confirm a location and possibly a selected menu and cost. Dinner and drinks will be a shared cost event for Saturday Night.

 

               Transportation:  I am not sure if the hotel has a shuttle bus to the airport or not, I do not believe so. Margo can confirm if Jacksonville has Uber service. We will look into a shuttle bus from the hotel to the game and back once we get a head count. We do have a few parking passes for the game which we will use to load a couple of cars with pre and post- game supplies for tail-gating at the game.

                In follow-up to my email in January, I wanted to update everyone regarding the ND/Navy game in Jacksonville next Nov 5.

 

·        The game is scheduled for a Saturday, 11:30 am Kickoff time on 11/5/16

·        Other than buying tickets from Notre Dame, they can be purchased  from the Jacksonville Ticketmaster website https://oss.ticketmaster.com/aps/gatorbowlsports/EN/buy/quickbuy/220   This is the Jacksonville Jaguars Stadium so the lower level tickets will be much better than the upper deck. If you have trouble with the website you can try an email to br...@jacksonvillesportscouncil.com  tell him that you are trying to buy tickets through the Jacksonville ND Club

·        Margo Kelly has reserved a block of hotel rooms at The Hampton Inn Jacksonville Downtown. The group rate is $440 for 2 people for 3 nights. The Phone number is 904-396-7770 The rooms are in a block for “Notre Dame Rugby” Confirmation # 86635893.  Please make your own reservations from this block and move the rooms needed to your own credit card.

·        So far I have heard back from the following people who are interested in attending:  Margo & Mike Kelly, Joe Hafner, Lee Pallardy, Don Greiwe, Dave Simpson, Bob Olson, Jerry Razer, Dan Lee, Bill Seetch, Herb Giorgio, Chet Z, Ed O’Connell. Spouses, family and guests are also welcome and expected. 

·        Lee will need to know pretty soon if you are interested in Fishing on Friday before the game. The fishing trip would probably require arrival in Jacksonville on Thursday to be able to fish early on Friday Morning. Email Lee directly to reserve a fishing spot at L...@leepallardyinc.com.  We may need to reserve more than one Guide so the arrangements will need to be made as soon as we get a head count.  Golf on Friday will also be available but it will be easier to reserve later.  Sorry Bobo and Razer, no Rugby game is scheduled but by age 65, most of us have figured out how to drink without playing a game first!

·        Please let me know if you are confirmed for that weekend and I will coordinate the head count with Margo for her party on Friday Night.  We will also see if we can book a place for dinner on Saturday since the game will be over by 3:30.

 I have been working with Margo (Pallardy) Kelly and Lee Pallardy about the Navy game in Jacksonville next November 5^th.  Margo is going to host a Party at her house on Friday night before the game.  Lee is working on some fishing guides for those that want to arrive on Thursday and go fishing on Friday morning, and there will be golf available on Friday for any golfers.  We have a hotel lined up and I will send those details out separately to anyone interested.

Greetings, Irish Family!  As the Club's slate of events gets more crowded, I'll try to highlight those things coming up and those that I've added to the weekly email, so no one misses a great experience they wished they'd have seen. Coming up this week, we have ND Women Connect's restaurant week get-together on Sunday the 23rd.  NDWC's fall book club is already in progress on Facebook, lasting through October 14th. NDWC will be collecting clothing for veterans newly in the workforce - more on that below. Yeah we were thinking about trying to do a bit of both. But we get to see a lot of rugby at home and never get to see football. So that’s the main reason. Will meet up with nick Civetta for a beer after the game anyway.
