It was spring 72. The Navy guys were up big before we woke up and kept yelling about remembering “last October” or some such horseshit. A number of them were former Navy football players and were evidently still pissed off they our classmates playing for Ara had pummeled them in the fall. Eddie is right – we shook the hangovers and very nearly won the damn match. Go Irish.

Remember a pummeling by a Navy squad in the Spring of ’73 at Washington and Lee/VMI one early am. 9am game following an overnight drive from South Bend to the tourney. Loss followed by 3 great wins by the Irish.
At least that is how I will tell the story!

But I believe that there will a NDRFC rugby 15’s match in San Diego vs Navy on that same weekend.
Last Fall at ND, Navy pummeled ND rather badly in the rain and cold.
Look for the Fall rugby 15’s schedule in late Spring, after the 7’s rugby season.
For those interested in 7’s, ND is the only rugby representative that is NOT a Jesuit University to play in the Jesuit Cup at Santa Clara University on April 21-22, 2018.
Two years ago, ND finished in second place. Last year, ND finished 6th out of 8 with a young squad.

I was in that van also it was a cargo van – only front bench seat. In the back we put three mattresses from Alumni Hall that we “borrowed” so about 5 of us could sleep in the back of the van. I was driving when we were side swiped on a two lane mountain road – tore the driver’s side mirror right off. Never forget it –thought we had bought the ranch! After Terry tore the bannister off in the frat house, we found out we were playing Navy in 4 or 5 hours. We did return the mattresses to Alumni.
Heard Elko took the DC job at A&M for $1.5 - $2.0 per year. A&M first tried to hire the DC from LSU and LSU countered with $2.5 million per year to keep him. Hate to see him go – the D was vastly improved this year. Elko was under contract at ND – why did we let him go?
