Gentlemen,
I met with with Chris earlier today. I gave my notice earlier this month and am working with Lonnie and RecSports for a smooth transition.
Our ND Rugby Program is in a very good place...
It is with some personal sadness that I announce that I have stepped down from my position at the University of Notre Dame Rugby Program. After 8 years of dramatic success, it's time to move on. Lonnie Heeter has been named Interim Head Coach. Lonnie joined me in restarting the Rugby Program in 2007 and understands the ND student/athlete and their demands. Lonnie will be supported by our current staff, Joel Bennett, David Fee and Geoff Puls.
All the support from the South Bend community was brilliant! Pat and Sue Mulligan…I still love you and thank you for all you did for our program!
Without our Alumni, none of this would have happened. Thank you Chris, Don and John for re-starting the program. Ken Stinson's support is outrageous. Other Alumni are now stepping up. Ken and I have been working on an Alumni Association for the past couple of years and Ken will announce this formation next month. This is a massive opportunity for former players and parents to help in this next stage of development of the Program.
The University of Notre Dame has been silently supportive of our success. A sincere thank you to Missy Conboy, JAG and the Athletic Department. Mark Williams, our new Director of RecSports has been nothing but overly supportive. Thank you!
Finally, I would like to thank all the players that put up with me…I love you all, no exception! I challenged you and you challenged me, but I loved it!! Thank you. I love you!
Change is not a bad thing. The ND Rugby Program is in a very good place…
Coach O'
Bobo, what a great memory. We actually ran around at Brother Rice for about an hour or so on Saturday afternoon and then went to our house. The Lions fly half – Perkins – hit about a 45 yard drop goal to tie and then the ref blew it up.

A return wish to you all for a Happy New Year to you and your families.
In response to Bobo about letting go Van Gorder I think his schemes, while complicated, do work. I think the tackling is atrocious. No wrapping up the ball carrier. Just an NFL type hit with the shoulder and standing back to look and intimidate. However, the ball carrier just spins out and heads for the stripe.
I cannot imagine George Kelly or Joe Yonto allowing that to happen. All of our close games against weaker opponents were close because of shoddy tackling technique.
While I am pontificating here, no pulpit in seven years and it never goes away entirely, I would also add that as a team we are not NASTY enough. Plain and simple we are not mean. SB Trib ran an article about this topic and asked that question. Answer is a resounding NO!
Difficult to be barbarian on the field and a gentleman off it. Those who can flip that switch at will are champions. The rest are runners-up.
Seetchmo
Happy New Year everyone !Morry, get out of the cave and say hello !

I don't think he wants to be physical in practice.I was equally frustrated by our coverage scheme for their short throws, which is all Meyer allows Barrett to throw. We gave them far too much cushion, and almost never stopped them on third down. Hard to tell if that is Kelly, Van Gorder or Todd Lyght, but our secondary play hasn't been good all year. How can we not be ready to play defense in the second biggest game of the Kelly era?On Sun, Jan 3, 2016 at 2:23 PM, Bill Keeler <WKe...@gsblaw.com> wrote:Exactly right, was at the Fiesta Bowl and from the opening moments saw no Irish emotion on the field or off (including coaches). Don and all,
I have been working with Margo (Pallardy) Kelly and Lee Pallardy about the Navy game in Jacksonville next November 5th. Margo is going to host a Party at her house on Friday night before the game. Lee is working on some fishing guides for those that want to arrive on Thursday and go fishing on Friday morning, and there will be golf available on Friday for any golfers. We have a hotel lined up and I will send those details out separately to anyone interested.
If there is any early interest, just let me know. The fishing may be the hardest to schedule with 3 to 4 people per boat unless Admiral Fishburne still has connections to get us a larger ship? Joe

As of last week Sean O'Leary has departed the university as head coach of Notre Dame R.F.C. Lonnie Heeter, who formerly served as the assistant coach for the forwards is stepping in as the interim head coach, and will be managing all on field activities. I am not aware of any timelines for further decisions to be made regarding the head coaching position. This is obviously a program that we all care about enormously. I hoped to engage any of you who might be interested in offering your assistance as we seek to stabilize the program and move forward in a new direction.

How goes the search for a coach, update would be great. Cleaning up the basement, found this little blurb, in the Chicago Trib I think. With no practice, we showed up and tied this bastards! I remember personally punching ( this was the old days their big ugly prop Wilson? from England from behind after he kicked the crap out of me in a loose). No offense to Nick the Fed and Dougie Smego who did play for the Lions after leaving ND!. Think we trained by drinking a couple at Ed O'Connel's house prior to the game, and Razer was lifting big weights with one hand on the driveway?Cheers, bobo

Subject: [ND Rugby NEWS] Notre Dame Rugby Coaching UpdateGents,I have spoken with a number of people affiliated with the Notre Dame rugby program and wanted to notify you of some recent changes. If you are able to offer any assistance directly to Lonnie he can be reached by email at lghe...@comcast.net. Hopefully we'll be seeing many of you back on the sidelines soon. Until then.Faugh a Ballagh,Chris Harrington

We have a hotel lined up and I will send those details out separately to anyone interested.
If there is any early interest, just let me know. The fishing may be the hardest to schedule with 3 to 4 people per boat unless Admiral Fishburne still has connections to get us a larger ship? Joe

I am way past the age where an 18 hour road trip (one way) sounds exciting, even if I have the pleasure of your company the entire 18 hours or a radio (right Krueger). Also, at our age we just may have to stop at every truck stop along the way, but not to practice our skills. Now if you want to fly your Lear jet and pick me up, that's a different proposition.
The radio is in reference to a trip Pat Krueger and I took to New Orleans for the 73 Sugar Bowl. A high school friend of mine came with us. We were an hour out of Evansville on the return trip when my friend noticed there was no radio in the car. Believe it or not we had BSed the whole way.

Please get me David Fee and Sean Duffy’s email addresses and I’ll forward them the after-match photos. For all those who couldn’t make the match or view the steamed version, the Irish are young, were outweighed everywhere by perhaps 20 to 25 pounds a man (except even more in the front row where the game is always decided) and were game throughout without ever quitting. After two quick scores by Arizona the Notre Dame pack pounded away for phase after phase at the Arizona try line with some success and made it close. In the second half however they were just worn down and couldn’t stay with a top notch club who has several games under their belt in a highly competitive conference. For example the Notre Dame freshman loose-head never got split although the Wildcat tight-head and hooker have both represented the Junior All Americans (U20s). The Irish have an undersized flanker who could play for any college team (and told me he would never play for any school but Notre Dame) and the team will only continue to improve.WILLIAM J. Gents,
My most memorable St. Patty’s Day was in Ireland in 71 when Dirtball and I snuck into the hospital after hours to share some beers with Morry, who was injured in the match that we played earlier in the day. Things were fine until the nuns investigated the noise coming from his room. It remains my contention that if we didn’t save his life, we improved his spirits.

Chernak
Ron,
Thanks for that memory jog.
I was in Ireland with you guys, but had forgotten that story.
I was hanging around with John Leino (who went by O’Niel while we were in the Emerald Isle) for most of the time. I do remember the day being celebrated more as a Holy Day rather than an American holiday. Of course all that meant was that the pubs didn’t open till after mass.

The Irish have an undersized flanker who could play for any college team (and told me he would never play for any school but Notre Dame) and the team will only continue to improve.

With the understanding that the statute of limitations, has expired, we were not kicked out of Ireland on St. Patrick’s Day, but there was a dance in the ballroom of the hotel that we stayed at that night and the locals took exception to the amount of attention that was being given to their women. Management provided several cases of beer to entice us to retire to our part of the hotel. There is also a 2nd chapter to that event as well as an incident with the local constables searching our luggage and seizing some souvenirs/trophies. Those stories are best shared in large gatherings with adult beverages.
Go Irish!

I believe we spent St. Patrick’s day in a town rather far from our hotel—although not sure everyone went or many of us missed the bus back. In any event I was introduced around the ballroom by Mrs. Duggan, as her long lost cousin from America. Later on I spent some time assuring a nice young lady --who had her boyfriend drive those of us left behind back to our hotel in shifts---seems she was crying cause she had overheard Leino say as he left in the first shift---“Let’s kill him and take his car!” she didn’t stop crying till her boyfriend returned.----My most memorable St. patty’s day ever. Ron I spoke to Dirtball on Fri. and he said you and he are both coming to the reunion. Great news! We need to get a final head count once everyone is registered and I’ll call the alumni rep. to make sure we can get everyone who is staying in the dorms together on same floor. Joey Dugan
It wasn’t a brick—it was a beer pitcher—we couldn’t leave the country till Leino wrote a rubber check—or so the story goes.
Don,
Are you still staying in touch with Smego, Pallardy, and the gang?
Good to know that many of us are still on the right side of the dirt,

In follow-up to my email in January, I wanted to update everyone regarding the ND/Navy game in Jacksonville next Nov 5.
· The game is scheduled for a Saturday, 11:30 am Kickoff time on 11/5/16
· Other than buying tickets from Notre Dame, they can be purchased from the Jacksonville Ticketmaster website https://oss.ticketmaster.com/aps/gatorbowlsports/EN/buy/quickbuy/220 This is the Jacksonville Jaguars Stadium so the lower level tickets will be much better than the upper deck. If you have trouble with the website you can try an email to br...@jacksonvillesportscouncil.com tell him that you are trying to buy tickets through the Jacksonville ND Club
· Margo Kelly has reserved a block of hotel rooms at The Hampton Inn Jacksonville Downtown. The group rate is $440 for 2 people for 3 nights. The Phone number is 904-396-7770 The rooms are in a block for “Notre Dame Rugby” Confirmation # 86635893. Please make your own reservations from this block and move the rooms needed to your own credit card.
· So far I have heard back from the following people who are interested in attending: Margo & Mike Kelly, Joe Hafner, Lee Pallardy, Don Greiwe, Dave Simpson, Bob Olson, Jerry Razer, Dan Lee, Bill Seetch, Herb Giorgio, Chet Z, Ed O’Connell. Spouses, family and guests are also welcome and expected.
· Lee will need to know pretty soon if you are interested in Fishing on Friday before the game. The fishing trip would probably require arrival in Jacksonville on Thursday to be able to fish early on Friday Morning. Email Lee directly to reserve a fishing spot at L...@leepallardyinc.com. We may need to reserve more than one Guide so the arrangements will need to be made as soon as we get a head count. Golf on Friday will also be available but it will be easier to reserve later. Sorry Bobo and Razer, no Rugby game is scheduled but by age 65, most of us have figured out how to drink without playing a game first!
· Please let me know if you are confirmed for that weekend and I will coordinate the head count with Margo for her party on Friday Night. We will also see if we can book a place for dinner on Saturday since the game will be over by 3:30.
· All the best, joe

Subject: Re: New ND Director of Rugby Announcement
Phil what is his Rugby background. I just hosted the ND Team this past weekend for dinner great kids. I suggest someone else going to Philly step up and pay forward and host the lads for dinner so it doesn't come out of Our Ladies purse. Watch number 7 great player.Go Irish,
Guys,I know that many of you have been wondering what the heck has been going on at ND relative to the hiring of a new, permanent Rugby coach. Even after having witnessed it up close and personal for the last 8-9 months I can't really explain. Its kind of like the mystery of the Holy Trinity that our priest struggled with at Mass this last Sunday. Some things having to do with our Faith and our beloved alma mater just can't be explained. That being said, in the end, our friends at Student Affairs/Rec Sports got it right. Justin Hickey is likely the best candidate on the face of this planet for our ND Rugby Program. There will be some kind of official announcement coming from our new ND Rugby Alumni Advisory Committee fairly soon I expect. So just consider this bulletin to be a sneak preview.I do want to use this opportunity to call two other things to your attention.1.) I know many of you are planning to gather in Jacksonville, FL in early November for the ND @ Navy football weekend. Sounds like you will have a blast and we will all look forward to some embarrassing photos and narratives. Please do keep in mind however that plans are also moving forward for a Rugby Reunion at ND on the Duke @ ND football weekend in late September. Duke is bringing its Rugby team to ND for a 15s match, day and time still TBD. It might be under the lights at Stinson Field on Friday night; or late Saturday morning before the 3:30 pm football kickoff. Stay tuned for further details. Hope to see many of you there.2.) Our team will once again be competing in the CRC 7s Tourney in Philadelphia on the first weekend of June. We could really use some help from this group in selling tickets. In order to compete and be televised by NBC we have to invest a little over $20,000 each year. The only way we can generate revenue to offset that cost is to sell tickets to the CRC at $45 per copy. If everybody on this distribution bought only a single ticket, our budget for next year would get a healthy boost. If you live in or near the NY,NJ,PA corridor please join us at the CRCs for a day or two. I've been to 4 of them and they are a great time. If you can't make it to Philly you can assign your ticket to Interim Coach Lonnie Heeter and he will see to it that it gets donated to a local student. Here is the link to our Ticket site. Please be generous! Thanks guys. Go IRISH!Phil

Subject: Program Director, Men's and Women's Rugby/Men's Head Coach: Justin Hickey
Good day everyone,Following an extensive national search, it is with much enthusiasm and excitement that I announce that Justin Hickey has accepted our offer to become the Program Director for Men’s and Women’s Rugby, along with assuming the Men’s Rugby Club head coaching duties here at the University of Notre Dame.Justin is currently the Director of Athletics for the Moon Area School District in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. Prior to his year in Moon, Justin served as the Head Coach of Men’s Rugby at Clemson University for four and a half years while simultaneously working towards a PhD in Athletic Administration. In addition, he served as Managing Editor for Coach and Athlete in Education magazine, which is geared toward the development of athletic administrators and coaches. He also held an adjunct faculty position in which he taught coaching courses, as well as an introductory rugby course for both men and women. In his final year coaching at Clemson, he was unanimously voted Penn Mutual Varsity Cup National Coach of the Year by his peers.Justin currently serves as an Assistant Coach for the USA Rugby Collegiate All Americans and has managed the USA U20 Junior National Team, which won the IRB Junior World Rugby Trophy championship.I would be remiss if I did not thank Lonnie Heeter for stepping in when we needed his support. Lonnie has been the Interim Men's Club Head Coach for several months and will be giving Justin a great foundation to build upon. Justin will officially join the Notre Dame family when he arrives on campus on May 31st. He will be attending the CRC 7's in Philadelphia as a representative of the University, but Coach Heeter and his staff will coach our team on the field that weekend with Justin taking over day to day operations upon the completion of that tournament. Please join me in welcoming Justin and his family to the University, Division of Student Affairs and RecSports staff.Mark--Mark A. WilliamsDirector, RecSportsUniversity of Notre Dame(574) 631-4818 (fax)100 Rolfs Sports Recreation CenterNotre Dame, IN 46556
Could you please send out an email to the rugby club that I have 2 tickets for the Miami game that I will not be using and would like to sell at face value? Thanks!
Mark
How goes the search for a coach, update would be great. Cleaning up the basement, found this little blurb, in the Chicago Trib I think. With no practice, we showed up and tied this bastards! I remember personally punching ( this was the old days their big ugly prop Wilson? from England from behind after he kicked the crap out of me in a loose). No offense to Nick the Fed and Dougie Smego who did play for the Lions after leaving ND!. Think we trained by drinking a couple at Ed O'Connel's house prior to the game, and Razer was lifting big weights with one hand on the driveway?Cheers, boboFrom: "Christopher Harrington" <cbha...@gmail.com>

Subject: [ND Rugby NEWS] Notre Dame Rugby Coaching UpdateGents,I have spoken with a number of people affiliated with the Notre Dame rugby program and wanted to notify you of some recent changes. If you are able to offer any assistance directly to Lonnie he can be reached by email at lghe...@comcast.net. Hopefully we'll be seeing many of you back on the sidelines soon. Until then.Faugh a Ballagh,Chris Harrington

One night on that trip over a few pints, Brian regaled a group of us with stories of a trip be had a bit before ours.
He had a bus load of Japanese women who were eager to "entertain" their male driver who was so good to them.
"Jesus," Brian said. "They were on me two or three at a time. After the trip I took me bed for three days so I could catch me breath."

Ah, the good old days. This blast from the past is a nice mood raiser after the terrible turn of events with the football team,
Remember the lunch and kegs that were set up at the home of the ND student we met on the plane who's dad was some trade representative appointed by Nixon? We serenaded them with songs of a clean nature. I think there were only two!
