cleaning out crap.  My first year playing rugby.  We went to the Natl C tourney in VA, played Navy after driving and drinking all night. Lost 10-6. Won't mention what happened with crazy people like Pat Krueger, Jimmy Carr, Richie Campagna, Terry McCarthy, et at.    Terry got expelled from ND for the damage he did to Washington and Lee dorm.  Navy went to the finals and lost to Palmer I think.  Back then, Palmer was what Life has been last 15? years.  a chiropractic school who gave scholarships to foreign rugby players.  We played them every year when I was at ND.   Won at least twice in 4 years!
We played a lot of teams way outside our geographic area.  Fun times. In 1973 we returned Colo St participation in a tourney at CSU, with Air Force, Barbos, Denver and ?,

Hi Guys:

Truly I enjoy the bantering from “youngsters” like you, as I was ONE OF THE ORIGINALS from 1961-65.  We played in April, 1965 in the first Irish Rugby Invitational where the finals were held in ND Stadium. That was the thrill of a lifetime.

That tournament was covered by Sports Illustrated, since we had a rugger on our team e.g. Rex Lardner, Jr. whose father was a sports reporter for SI.  Talk about connections….LOL!

ND fortunately prevailed 3-0, beating a semi-pro team from Toronto.  See SI archives May 5-6, 1965 edition (I think).

I noticed that in 1972 that there was also an Irish Invitational, so will someone plse confirm if that was the SECOND Irish Rugby Invitational (or not)?

Hope everyone is surviving advancing age or perhaps that has already arrived.

RUGBY BECAUSE….

Bobo:  Great info abour your teams in the early seventies.  Mark Keown and Gerry Vitiello are doing well as are Ralph, Bainy and Sods.  I am thinking of coming to the 50th Reunion this year.  Are you going?  Nick Grosch

Gay,
Yes, our connection to Sports Illustrated was through Rex Lardner's father, but Rex actually wrote the story about that first tournament.  I've visited Ben Beall and his wife the past two summers in Steamboat Springs CO. He's doing quite well in the Rockies and has an original copy of the publication.  With that info, I was able to extract the story from the SI archives.  Here's my email to him with a link to the story, just prior to my visit last August:

Ben,
Okay,  with your info, finding the story was easy.  Navigating it, more complex.  The title:  The Playing and the Partying Were Loovly.  This link should display the story's first  page: https://vault.si.com/vault/1965/05/10/42853#&gid=ci0258bee1e005278a&pid=42853---069---image
Once you find the story, you can move pages back & forth using the arrowheads in small boxes on either side of whichever page you're on.  Then expand the type size by first placing the cursor on the page; then it will change to a small magnifying glass with a plus sign on the glass.  Click once, and the type size will expand; click again, it will diminish.
Inform me of your results.  Call me if you have problems:  512-461-6577.
                  Good luck,
                           Mike Powers
                           ND '65

P.S.  Gay, I understand from Bill Ryan that you had a serious health problem sometime this past year.  Hope you are better.  Pls acknowledge accessing the SI story.
                 Mike

Bobo-
Razor and I ended up playing with a bunch of those AF Academy guys back here in AR.  They were stationed at the LR AirForce Base. Still see a lot of them at the annual golf fund raiser. Great group of guys!
