There is a college in Harare that contains a large observatory within the
grounds.
Not sure of name but it is close to the Sheraton Hotel and the Polytechnic.
Possible names Prince Edward School or Alan Wilson School.
Almost certainly an optical a relic of pre liberation days which may be
obsolete these days?
An E-mail to the Sheraton may find the correct name.

It is Prince Edward School and having seen their rugby team at a recent
schools festival I am pretty certain that the tradition of astronomy will
have been kept going along with the others.

Yes the Prince Edward School did/does have an astronomy club with
their own observatory. In the "bad old days", I recall students
being encourgaged to grind their own mirrors to build telescopes.

PE school does have a couple of web sites, I don't know the URLs
but a trawl through that other wicked site, Rhodesians On the WWW
should provide them, and contact with them might give info on an
astronomy soc. in Zim.

Hope this helps

I can confirm that Prince Edward school still has a viable astronomy club as
does St. John's college Borrowdale

Bad indeed. My brother was one of the founding members (he's still an
astronomer) and was blown up rather badly by mirror-silvering compound
left in his locker over the weekend, in about 1960. He's still getting
bits of glass coming out of the muscles of his leg. The enquiry found
that the formation of the estimated 50g of "Silver fulminate", the most
powerful chemical explosive known, was an extremely rare event.
I wonder where you heard of the mirror-making?
If the original poster wants to contact my brother I will help him.
Have fun,

Is it not a fact that astronomical telescopes are severely handicapped by
city lighting?.
If so Prince Edward School must now be situated in close proximity to
perhaps the brightest area in Harare - Zanu PF HQ - The Sheraton -
Monomatapa - The Shell Building - etc. Developments not thought of when the
observatory was constructed. It would be interesting to know if it is still
effective.
