Howdy, folks-

I have an update on what Great Dane offers as far as a venue to host our annual birthday luncheon.

For one, they have availability when we want it, on January 15th at either the Hilldale or Fitchburg locations. They did say that if we wanted to book a private room that could hold all of us (I estimated between 12 and 20 folks), they would require a food/drink minimum charge per hour, which wouldn't be too bad, but it would require we come hungry and thirsty, which we do (for the appropriate space for our group, that's around $100 an hour). I think, if we decided to hold our traditional story discussion there it might run longer than we would want, but I'm not sure.

The main problem I saw was that they also wanted to charge us $20 for a cake-cutting fee, which didn't strike me as very sporting. I asked, if we just sat in the general space, would they still charge the fee, and they said yes, and there would be no minimum charge, so that's an option.

I'm not sure if Benvenuto's charged anything or how we took care of that, but perhaps that's a better option, just due to the cake fee alone.

Thoughts? Opinions? Ideas?

You strike me as a pretty savvy procurer, so anything you come up with is fine with me.  Fitchburg is probably close to the meeting place, and Hilldale is a stone's throw from our house, so that's a toss-up.

I agree that the Dane seems to be asking a lot, between the hourly minimum and the cake fee.  I just did a brief search and wondered about the following - has anybody got opinions on any of them?

Mid Town Pub, Middleton
Per their web site, “Book the conference room for any special event or function. The room is FREE of charge with any purchase of drink items or menu items.”
I have been there a number of times and it’s a friendly place with good bar food.

Erin’s Snug Irish Pub, east side of Madison
They have several rooms, not much info on the web site but contact info on finding out what they can do

Vintage Brewing Company, several locations, I looked at the one on Whitney Way
From the web site this might be the most formal/organized one; they mentioned a cake fee but said it would be waived if we brought our own plates, serving utensils, etc.

Any thoughts on these as possibilities?
Or there’s Benvenuto’s too.  I guess I’m just voting against the Great Dane at this point.

I like all of those venues.

Vintage on Whitney has the advantage of being a historically significant locale for the Canary Trainers (back when it was J.T. Whitney's). Erin's Snug is a nice space (it may be the closest thing to an Irish Pub in the Madison Area), but they're far for many of us...

I suppose paper plates might be the way to go with a cake service, just to save cleanup for the venue.

Also, I think my previous email was also a vote against the Great Dane. 😀

I am thinking I'd prefer any of Diane's suggestions over either Great Dane or Benvenuto’s.  - John
