This month we will be discussing The Adventure of the Empty Room. This adventure was first published in September 1903 in
Collier's in the United States. It was then published in The Strand Magazine
in October 1903 in the United Kingdom. It was later published as part of the collection of stories,
The Return of Sherlock Holmes.
Sherlock fans eagerly awaited this adventure after they believed he had been killed 5 years earlier. Due to public pressure and the offer of more money, Doyle brought Sherlock back to life in this adventure.
Doyle had a lot to accomplish in this story, including:
- Explaining how Sherlock survived the fall at Reichenbach Falls?
- Explaining where he had been.
- Why did he keep his survival secret?
- Reviving the friendship between Holmes and Watson.
- Returning Holmes to the good graces of Inspector Lestrade and Scotland Yard.
- Reestablishing Holmes as the world's foremost consulting detective.
- Writing a great detective story.
These questions and many others make this story ripe for discussion.
Our group will meet at 3:00 pm and last until 4:30 pm. The meeting will be held at the
Memorial United Church of Christ at 5705 Lacy Road in Fitchburg. Our group will also be meeting there in July and August—many thanks to Johanna for arranging a meeting place for our summer meetings.
Since this is Father's Day, we may have members celebrating and unable to attend. To those members, enjoy your holiday! As for me, my granddaughter is having her sweet 16 birthday on the 16th. That is where I will be, but I will be thinking of our group.
