Hi folks,
attached is the basic life support/choking child chapter taken from an Advanced Paediatric Life Support Manual. This is a course I teach to senior nurses and doctors so don't be alarmed if some of the text is a bit too much like an episode of ER. If I you can have a look at it before Monday it will probably help what I teach you make more sense. The important bits to take in are the flow charts for basic life support and the choking child. I have listed below the translation for some of the more medical terms just to make it a bit easier to understand but if you have any other queries just give me a shout,

The ABC approach: stands for Airway, Breathing and Circulation
EMS= Emergency Medical Services = Ambulance (999)
BLS: Basic Life Support
Defibrillation: The electric shock thing that is done to re-start the heart
Arrhythmia: Abnormal heart rhythm
Mandible: Jaw bone
Hypoxia/hypoxic: Low levels of oxygen
Pharynx: Back of the throat
Cervical spine: neck
Medial aspect of ante-cubital fossa: inner aspect of the elbow on the side nearest the childs body
Sternum: Breast bone
Xiphisternum: Small piece of bone at the bottom of the breast bone where your ribs meet at the front
Dyspnoea: Difficulty breathing
Apnoea/apnoeic: Not breathing
Cyanosed: Turns blue
