Recruiting students for STEAM & Social Justice Mentorship Program

By Our Future Is Science ● Aug 28, 2023

The intersection of STEAM and social justice is where young people can make societal breakthroughs that will positively impact the future of communities across the world. On behalf of the Aspen Institute Science & Society Program, we are excited to share that we are accepting applications for the 2023 Our Future is Science (OFIS) Mentorship Program. OFIS is a virtual program that connects high-schoolers with STEAM graduate students to explore science and social justice intersections. Honoraria are provided ($1,000-$1,500). Learn more and apply here.

Overview

Key features of our equity-centered, academic year-long journey of mentorship, scientific learning and application, community engagement, science communication, and career exploration include:

  • Mentorship Team meetings
  • Professional development workshops monthly community talks featuring scientists from across disciplines as well as those in science-adjacent careers
  • Access to our OFIS social justice e-library and module-based learning (on topics such as AI, climate science, health disparities, big data within the context of social justice)
  • Peer-to-peer activities with opportunities to enhance public speaking, critical thinking, and collaboration
  • A culminating experiential Capstone Project, where mentees, supported by mentors, apply the scientific method to create evidence-based solutions to a problem in their own community

Apply Today!

High-school students (10-12th grade) and current Graduate STEAM students attending a U.S.-based academic institution are eligible to apply. Apply here.

Application deadlines:

  • Mentors - September 15th by 11:59PM ET
  • Mentees - September 30th by 11:59PM ET

OFIS is committed to fostering diversity and enthusiastically welcomes applications from those of underserved, underrepresented, and historically marginalized identities.

**Social justice experience is not required for mentors or mentees. Ideal participants are curious, open to new perspectives, and/or are motivated to explore how science, and STEAM more broadly, can be used as a tool to solve some of the world’s most challenging issues.
