Colleagues,
We have a few reminders and notifications about Undergraduate Research & Projects for Spring 2026.
CSC Undergraduate Research/Projects Lightning Talks
Undergraduate Research/Projects Lightning Talks will be on Friday, January 16th, from 12:30 pm to 2:00 pm in EBII 3211. A lightning talk is a 5-minute (2-3 slides) advertisement for a research project you’re willing to work on with one or more undergraduate students. Lightning talks are an excellent way to promote your lab’s work with minimal effort and time commitment.
Submit projects you want to present (or have a grad student present) to our undergrads by 9 am on Friday, January 16th. Project information will be posted to http://go.ncsu.edu/csc_ugresearch for students to review (this will be updated periodically throughout the semester as a living document of possible projects). Presentations will be in person. If you can’t make it, we can play a video (but live presentations are preferred by the students).
CSC 299/490/499 Timeline and Expectations
If you are mentoring a student for course credit through either Mentored Research (CSC 299), Independent Study (CSC 490 - note, this course has been renumbered from CSC 498), or Independent Research (CSC 499), please see the timeline for you and students:
The student needs to fill out the CSC 299/490/499 Request Form by Thursday, January 22nd to request enrollment
The student will submit the project proposal (that you’ve reviewed and approved) and the Non-Standard Course Agreement form (that you’ve signed) to a provided Google folder by Friday, January 23rd.
The CSC Advising Office will verify the completeness of paperwork after the proposal is submitted.
Start working on the project!
The CSC Undergraduate Curriculum Committee will review proposals during the first month of classes. They may request that the student make updates.
The student will complete a summary report of their project (that you’ve reviewed and approved). The summary report must be shared in the Google folder by April 28th (the last day of the semester).
The CSC Undergraduate Curriculum Committee will review final reports and follow up if any changes are needed.
Submit the final grade to MyPack! (Just for your student.)
See the CSC Undergraduate Research and Independent Study page for additional details about the process and expectations.
COE REU Stipends
COE provides stipends to support undergraduate researchers. The stipends are $3000 for a semester and are distributed through financial aid. If approved, students will receive the funds in late January/early February. Students receiving the stipend are expected to make progress on the projects, not necessarily work a set number of hours. If insufficient progress is made on the project, students will be required to refund some or all of the stipend. Students are eligible for the stipend if they have paid the COE Program Enhancement Fee. The department has a policy for awarding these stipends. Please note that we only have 23 stipends for Spring 2026.
If you would like to request a stipend for a student, please fill out the REU Stipend Google Form (students should not fill out this form). Please note that students cannot do both a stipend and CSC 299/490/499. Students who were on stipends in previous semesters can receive stipends for a different project, but students who have yet to receive a stipend will be prioritized depending on demand. The deadline for stipend requests is Friday, January 23rd.
Thank you for your support of undergraduate research and projects!
Sarah
