Hello Again,
As you all know we will be having our Annual NCSU AIAS meeting on Saturday, April 5th at 10:00 in Talley student center.  WE NEED AS MANY AS POSSIBLE TO ATTEND!!!
We will be discussing some very important issues regarding Natives Americans & Native Issues at NCSU.

Some of the issues up for discussion are as follows:

Recently, we learned that Admissions was not going to host the Visitation Day in conjunction with the pow wow.  They were only going to sponsor a "booth" at the pow wow.  I shared this information with Tracey and alerted her my concerns.  I also shared with her that Educational Talent Search nor Indian Education could sponsor students to visit cultural events.  All programs had to be formal and have a "formal program" attached with it.  Immediately she contaced admissions and shared her concerns alerting them that the same issue happened in the Fall when Admissions decided they were not going to have a Recruitment Reception in Robeson County.  They have decided to host the event.

It seems as if NC State is NOT actively recruiting Native students.  It is not my job, yours, AIAS, students, MSA or the other few to recruit Native students to NC State.  It is the responsibilty of Admissions.  There must be a remedy to this delimna.  It is imperative that a Native recruiter or someone who is Native be hired within that office.  As it seems, the population is going to continue to decrease rapidly unless something is done.  Dr. Picart is doing nothing to address this.

Another issue we MUST address is Brett Locklear's vacant position.  Advocacy for the position to be split is idea, especially now.  Student are supporting this and are advocating for it but little if any leadway is being given.  THe responsibilities of the position are too much for one person and one person cannot adequate fullfil the position to carry out all the duties needed.  I think we should assist with putting pressure on admininstration to consider this option.  This is the prime opportunity to do it since it is vacant.  However, with this also comes the necessity for increased funding.  MSA has been poorly funded since its inception.  A band-aid approach will not work.  It is a all or nothing type of deal - with some room for negogiation, I think.  :)

Time is imperative, especially as Brett's vacant position is being interviewed for now and they are looking to hire a person (s) - hopefully, before the end of the semester.

Come out on Saturday and lets prepare to get NCSU to make some changes in these important areas.
