Greetings on behalf of NC State's American Indian Alumni Society. We hope this email finds you well. Please see below for some updates and key upcoming dates!

News On Campus:

The American Indian students at NC State continue to make great strides of campus. A few updates are below!

Student Senate votes to get rid of Columbus Day at NCSU (click link to view article):  Current student Karli Moore (Lumbee) has been instrumental in championing a movement at NC State to institute Indigenous Peoples Day, thus essentially eliminating the Columbus Day holiday and recognition at NC State. This effort won debate and passed within the student chambers and senate at NC State as well as the Staff Senate. It will be heard in the Faculty Senate, and then will move for recommendation and consideration to the Office of the Chancellor. Should this continue, as expected, NC State will be the only institution within the UNC system to have successfully done this and the only predominately white university in the nation to take on such a huge endeavor.

Native Education ForumThe University has instituted a six-day residential summer program for rising 11th and 12th grade Native American students.  The program allows students to experience university campus life, gain one university academic credit, become exposed to a college classroom, interact with American Indian faculty, staff and students, as well as obtain assistance with the college application process.

This year, the NC State students  organized a drum group. They performed a special song honoring alumni at this year's 25th Annual powwow in March.

Next Meeting:

Our next meeting will be Friday, July 3rd. Although the Native community continues to make  great progress are making at NC State, we have recently learned that two of the Native American staff on campus will be leaving to pursue other opportunities. This is a major set back in the progress that has been made on campus and can potentially have a impact on students (current and future). We need your participation and input now more than ever to ensure the Native community is able to continue to push forward at NC State!

When: Friday, July 3rd, 6-8 pm
Where: Sheff's Seafood, 100 W 3rd St, Pembroke, NC 28372

Officer Nominations:
We will be voting on officers at the July 3rd meeting. If you are interested in a position or would like to nominate someone for a position, please submit names by clicking here!

AIAS is reinstating our mentor program. The transition to college and into the professional world can be a difficult one. We want to make this transition as easy as possible for our Native students.
