Hello, May: thank you for inviting me to take part in your panel. I will be happy to do so. We were planning on doing some house-hunting in Raleigh so your invitation comes at a convenient time. Although I am no fan of "Wikileaks," you will, of course, understand that I am now retired from the State Department and any comments I make reflect my own views --I'm a former journalist as well as a former diplomat-- rather than those of State. As for other resources, you might want to consider approaching  Patrick Duddy, who is the Diplomat in Residence at Duke University. Ambassador Duddy is a very personable gentleman who could give State's official view. His phone number is 919-668-1951. As for other resources, well, the accused leaker is an army private, and some of the leaked material was Department of Defense messages. If you want a DoD rep, I expect your ROTC advisor could help.

Your panel is addressing a very sensitive issue to which there are no easy answers. I say this as one who, as a reporter, used to rummage the County Commission wastebasket after meetings, looking for notes the commissioners probably considered private!

With regards to Prof.Kochersberger,

Ann Sides
(Consul General, Retired)

Madam Sides,

My name is May F. Chung, and I am the President of the Society for Collegiate Journalists at NC State.  We are hosting a panel discussion on Wikileaks for Sunshine Week, a week dedicated to "educating the public about the importance of open government and the dangers of excessive and unnecessary secrecy." Dr. Robert Kochersberger mentioned your name as a possible panelist because of your expertise in diplomacy, and we were wondering if you would like to come on down the road to Raleigh to speak at the discussion. The event will be in Daniels 434 on March 14th at 7pm. Please let me know if you are interested, or can pass this along to other contacts who would be knowledgeable. For more information, you can visit our website at http://ncsu.edu/scj

Thank you!

May F. Chung
