Dear friends of NCSE,

The American Institute of Biological Sciences offers its view of
Arizona's proposed state science standards.

AIBS ADDRESSES ARIZONA'S SCIENCE STANDARDS

In a September 20, 2018, letter, the American Institute of Biological
Sciences called on the Arizona state board of education to reject
draft science standards that are to be presented to the board at its
September 24, 2018, meeting.

AIBS expressed concern that the standards "fail to properly address
important aspects of evolution science" and moreover downplay climate
change at the high school level, recommending, "The standards should
be revised by science and science education experts."

AIBS's letter emphasized the economic costs of scientifically
compromised state science standards, warning that if the proposed
standards are adopted as-is, "Arizona will jeopardize its prior
investments and future economic opportunities."

Representing over one hundred member organizations, AIBS is a
nonprofit scientific association dedicated to advancing biological
research and education for the welfare of society, helping to guide
informed decisions about matters that require biological knowledge.
