POSITION DESCRIPTION:

Seattle Public Utilities (SPU) has multiple vacancies for experienced and self-directed Senior Construction Maintenance Equipment Operators (Sr CMEO), to be a part of the Solid Waste Operations team at the North (1320 N. 34th St., Seattle) and South Transfer Stations (130 S. Kenyon St., Seattle). This position is an integral part of a team that protects public health and environment in the greater Seattle area that includes the receiving, transferring, and transporting of residential and business waste, self-haul waste and recyclable materials delivered to the transfer stations. This is an excellent opportunity for the candidate who enjoys working in a team environment and serving the communities of the greater Seattle area.

The Senior Construction Maintenance Equipment Operator operates heavy equipment at both of SPU’s Transfer Stations that accepts and transfers waste material. This position uses the knowledge, skills and abilities about Solid Waste Management practices to perform a variety of duties using a variety of equipment.

JOB RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Experience operating large equipment, including loaders, excavators, sweeper trucks. Operate large loaders in solid waste utility transfer stations. 
  • Precision and working knowledge of the safe mechanical operation of light, medium, and large motorized construction, and maintenance equipment. 
  • Able and willing to train other employees to operate equipment. 
  • Adheres to all safety procedures and maintains applicable safety trainings.
  • Break up and load trash, organics, and various recyclables from tipping floor into large pre-compaction machines and top load trailers. 
  • Operate the entire range of a variety of heavy construction and maintenance equipment and attachments. 
  • Effectively communicates with personnel supporting the acceptance and transfer of waste.
  • Support Department goals in promoting RSJI objectives.
  • Performs other related duties of a comparable level/type as assigned.

QUALIFICATIONS:

Experience: 
 

  • Two years of heavy equipment operation and maintenance, or one year of experience with completion of a recognized course in construction and maintenance equipment operation that includes practical operating experience. 

License, Certification and Other Requirements:  


  • Washington State Commercial Class A driver's license with the Air Brake restriction removed. 
  • A demonstration of equipment operation skills will be administered to the most competitive candidates in the applicant pool. 
  • A Pre-Placement Medical Exam will be required for the finalist. 
  • A background check will also be required for the finalist. 
  • Must be willing to work weekends and holidays.

Work Environment/Physical Demands:     
                       

  • Required to work outdoors in all types of weather.
  • Work occurs in a solid waste transfer station with exposure to garbage and recycled waste.
  • Exposure to dust, dirt, high noise levels, fumes, odor, pests and exhaust.
  • Requires physical exertion to operate the equipment.
  • Requires standing, bending and stooping.
  • Operates around commercial haulers and members of the public.

The Ideal Candidate Profile: 


  • Abilities in mechanical aptitude 
  • Have working knowledge of the safe mechanical operation of light, medium and large motorized construction and maintenance equipment and medium and heavy trucks.
  • Ability to communicate and work effectively within a multi-cultural workforce serving a diverse customer base. 

Special Conditions:

The Department of Licensing (DOL) has several types of driving records available (for a minimal cost). The one you must submit to us is titled 'Full' driving record.
