Race to Zero Waste (R20W) is a California nonprofit which provides Zero Waste Education & Outreach in public spaces. As part of the Zero Waste Station Program, R20W is seeking highly motivated individuals to help assist the Eco Pop-up Program in Dolores Park, San Francisco. The project helps to provide holistic, community-based waste management, zero waste education, organization of waste materials generated at the park, and reporting of the diversion results from each event.

Zero Waste Educator (ZWE) Work Summary

Through the Love Dolores Campaign, you will help R20W facilitate park-goers’ zero waste education, while maximizing the diversion of materials from landfill. ZWEs will serve as ambassadors for the waste minimization program by educating patrons so that they can make better decisions on how to reduce and properly separate their waste. ZWEs will also be responsible for the setup and maintenance of the collection system as well as the purity of waste streams.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

  • Setup/takedown Zero Waste Stations.

  • Educate park-goers on what-goes-where.

  • Maintain sorting bins by removing contamination.

  • Transport materials via hand cart.

  • Follow instructions from the on-site ZW Supervisor.

Typical Working Conditions

Events are frequently outdoors and subject to weather (rain, sun, heat, cold, etc.). However, the Zero Waste Supervisor would notify all educators if air quality or outdoor conditions deem the Pop-up unsafe. ZWEs are on their feet for most of the shifts, staffing collection stations or moving materials to bulk storage areas. Each ZWE is allowed two 15-minute breaks and one 30-minute break each shift.

Minimum Education and Experience Required

  • High school diploma or GED and at least 21 years of age.

  • English speaker (B2 equivalent or higher).

  • Basic knowledge, interest, or experience of zero waste principles, recycling and/or conservation (Basic training available through this program).

  • Demonstrated ability to give direction regarding safety and to implement safety procedures.

Organizational Background

Race to Zero Waste (R20W) is a California 501c3 nonprofit whose mission is to educate communities about the destructive impact of single-use disposables and provide zero waste solutions and effective alternatives to reduce waste downstream.
