At the Ecology Center we have been focused on providing top level community based essential services and being here for our community in this extremely challenging time. Ecology Center recycling drivers and program staff, farmers’ market and store staff, have proceeded to provide essential services and adjust to the many changes throughout the pandemic and shelter in place orders. As you know the Ecology Center provides these local services with the mission to inspire and build a healthy sustainable and just future, leveraging our local efforts towards broader societal change.

We are grateful for the leadership of our current Farmers Market Program Manager, Nina Scoville, in making this essential service and community space safe and accessible through a constant barrage of necessary policy and operational changes. Sadly, she will be moving to Boston with her family in the late summer, and thus we are seeking a new leader for the markets. We know you are invested in the success of Berkeley’s markets and I wanted to reach out to you in hopes that you might share this with some of the fantastic people in your circles who might be the right fit.

The Farmers Market Program Manager position is a multifaceted and highly dynamic role. It leads the interface between multiple communities of farmers, shoppers, community partners, businesses districts, city and state regulators and more. It requires a soft touch and a firm backbone; excellent judgement when pressed with multiple priorities and immediate on site demands; strong planning, supervision, and relationship building abilities; and the ability to work outdoors in any weather. Someone who loves people in all their complexity and is committed to community service linking health, sustainability, community and justice will thrive in this role. Prior farmers' market management experience is very valuable, as there are a lot of unique aspects to managing farmers’ markets, but not totally necessary. Comparable experience with event production, small business development, and community based program leadership could be the basis for success in this role.
