GAIA Job Announcement

U.S. & Canada Regional Campaigns and Membership Coordinator

The Global Alliance for Incinerator Alternatives/Global Anti-Incinerator Alliance (GAIA) is a growing global alliance of over 800 members in 90 countries. GAIA was founded in 2000 in South Africa, and brings together grassroots organizations who are fighting for environmental justice, waging and winning campaigns against multimillion dollar waste corporations, taking on the corporate-driven “take-make-waste” model that is destroying our planet, and advancing bottom-up solutions that are good for communities, workers, the environment, and the climate.

We are looking for an inspiring, dynamic, and goal-oriented Regional Campaigns and Membership Coordinator who can provide leadership to GAIA’s campaigns and strategies in the U.S. and Canada region, and work with members to set a critical path for current and future work.  This is a position with significant professional growth and learning opportunities: as the climate justice movement is rapidly expanding around transformative, community-led solutions like zero waste and stopping incineration, corporate players are pushing back with a resurgence of dirty energy and toxic waste projects that threaten communities and workers across the landscape. There is much creative organizing to be done!

The successful candidate will be an effective networker and organizer who is excited by the opportunity to increase GAIA member involvement, regional strategizing, and cross-border solidarity, while contributing to the planning and implementation of campaigns and projects to defeat so-called “waste-to-energy” incineration proposals. She/he will be inspired by promoting and accompanying city-scale implementation of zero waste strategies, and supporting grassroots solutions to climate change through skillshares, advocacy, and other strategies.  The Regional Campaigns and Membership Coordinator will work on a team with the U.S. and Canada Program Director, and work closely with network members, the International Coordinator, Communications and Grantwriting Coordinator, and others in GAIA’s international coordination team.

GAIA’s U.S. & Canada regional team is primarily based in Berkeley, California, and our global coordination team includes people based in Chile, the Philippines, India, and Europe. (To learn more, see www.no-burn.org <http://www.no-burn.org> .)

PRIMARY RESPONSIBILITIES
GAIA’s U.S. and Canada Regional Campaigns and Membership Coordinator will provide leadership in the following primary areas: supporting and coordinating with member incineration campaigns, strategic and movement-building campaigns with members to stop pollution, and support of network infrastructure. As with most GAIA positions, this position will also include some international programs support. The Regional Campaigns and Membership Coordinator will:

·         Facilitate member support, network development, and consultation processes in U.S. & Canada;
·         Provide leadership to campaigns and strategies and set a critical path for GAIA’s regional work;
·         Provide political guidance and advice on projects and member support initiatives;
·         Co-facilitate the U.S. & Canada Stop Incinerator List;
·         Build linkages and partnerships between GAIA and allied movements;
·         Ensure regional participation in international campaigns, and provide input to global strategies;
·         Manage key relationships with coalitions and allied organizations;
·         Support and guide regional communications strategies, including the GAIA blog, website, and social media tools;
·         Support regional fundraising efforts;
·         Serve as a GAIA spokesperson to the media, at conferences and other public venues.

The Regional Campaigns and Membership Coordinator will also participate in GAIA’s international list serves, international campaigns, and strategy-setting conversations that support global alliance-building, in collaboration with the network’s international Coordination Team and membership.

ESSENTIAL QUALIFICATIONS:
·         At least five years of successful experience in campaign coordination and/or community organizing with a community-based organization, a people’s movement organization, environmental justice organization, or environmental organization.

·         Familiarity with environmental justice principles and practices, especially in building relationships and collaboration with frontline communities and grassroots groups and other organizations. Excellent networking skills and proven track record in uniting diverse opinions and teams around a common agenda and plan.
·         A commitment to GAIA’s mission and core values, including a passion for environmental justice and grassroots social change.
·         Experience with waste, pollution, and climate issues.
·         Strong writing and public speaking skills, with an ability to simplify messages and communicate complex issues to the public. Strong inter-personal communication and listening skills.
·         Ability to work well in a team structure with an approach based on collaboration, mentorship, accountability, and consensus-building.
·         Excited about working with a global multicultural alliance, which requires extensive online communication with members (primarily via email, phone, Skype, and other online tools). Highly computer literate.
·         Able to successfully direct a project from conception to completion. Systematic and goal-oriented – in it to win it!
