"Please replace me.  You have done this job or its components before, and you have been around the block.  You have friendly gravitas and you're well organized.

The job involves managing Human Resources, keeping the books, and running the office.  The HR system wants expansion and development, and the generally happy humans need support and calm tending.  The books need income and invoices to be entered, checks printed, accounts reconciled, financial reports generated, and audits supported.  You'll do payroll in-house.  You and the General Manager are the CPA's two contacts.  The office needs supplies and IT oversight, including phones, website, intranet, office gear, and print advertising.

The Administrative Manager works as a peer with the Operations Manager and is supervised by the General Manager, who reports to the Board of Directors.  These three are the operating leadership team, the ruling triumverate of currently 32 staff, whose numbers could well grow if the business keeps building.  You'll help with that in lots of ways from strategic planning to project management to making pro forma financial projections for lenders.  Unflappability, reliability, and a relentlessly honest business ethic as well as work ethic are critical.  You either now know human resources law pretty well for a layperson, or you will be happy to learn quickly using known resources.

You'll help coordinate a hoped-for transition this year to become a worker-owned coop with an operations hierarchy.  An optimistic and friendly heart will be required, along with an ability to calm frayed nerves.

Besides the transition and another couple of upcoming development projects, daily routine activities will include updating staff schedules and records, recording income and expenses in the books, writing and tracking checks, generating financial reports, doing payroll, paying taxes, and updating required State and City reports.  There's more, including managing insurance coverages and audits, and the many small recordkeeping and office tasks that are fundamental to the smooth operation of the business.  Teammates are helpful, but a well of calm inner energy will be required.

We've been in business for 40 years, and I've helped develop it.  We salvage from the transfer station, pick things up, and receive discards that people bring us in up to 100 vehicles a day.  We sort, price, and sell.  We are an environmental company, a force for social change, an essential business, for profit and also for public benefit.  We're serious about Ending the Age of Waste by changing how people behave, and we think enjoying ourselves and creating a welcoming environment sets a good example.  This business is full of community and never dull.  A former Administrative Manager commented that however you look at us, we're a different bear.  It will take a few months to be fully trained.  During the training, we will document the questions, answers, and protocols as we go.  The product might form the basis of the administrative section of our operating manual for not only this enterprise, but others in the future.  Every town needs one.

It's a warehouse retail environment, full of remarkably interesting people of all kinds.

Benefits: fully-paid healthcare premium for staff and dependents, including vision and dental care; paid vacation; 50% discount on purchases for personal use; profit sharing.

Wage: all staff at Urban Ore are paid by the hour, including a base wage and income sharing - a per-hour share of income (not profit).  The resulting wage is competitive.

If you think you might like to be interviewed to take on this job, please email your resume and a couple of paragraphs saying what you find appealing. "
